“The data reflect what we already know about physician shortages, but the speed at which this happened is remarkable and terrible," says @cofogart. New research published in @AnnFamMed shows the share of FPs working in rural areas dropped 11% in 6 years. bit.ly/3Kw3gDt

September 29 to October 3 is #FamilyMedicineWeek. This Family Medicine Week, I’m proud to celebrate the impact family physicians across the country have on their patients and their communities. There are a few things I know to be true: 1) Family Physicians are trusted messengers: family physicians help patients cut through the noise with facts, science and compassion. Patients know they can turn to their family doctor with any question, from immunizations to mental health, and be heard and respected. 2) Family physicians are uniquely positioned to care for patients at every stage of life, often caring for multiple generations within the same family. That continuity builds trust and strengthens relationships. 3) Family physicians live and work in the communities we serve. Family medicine does not exist in isolation—it thrives in partnership with patients, families, neighborhoods, and local organizations. Every person deserves access to health care and a family physician they can count on. That’s the vision the AAFP works toward every day. aafp.org/events/family-…

Really great study published by @joefigs2 @IPapanicolas and colleagues. Key finding: "avoidable mortality increased in all US states, primarily due to increases in preventable deaths, while it decreased in comparable high-income countries. Health spending was significantly negatively associated with avoidable mortality for other high-income countries but not across US states." I would argue that the US, as compared to other countries, spends its health care dollars inefficiently and should be investing more, significantly more, in primary care.

Avoidable mortality has worsened for all US states while other high-income countries show improvement. And while other countries seem to gain health with more spending, US states do not. Our new @JAMAInternalMed study led by @IPapanicolas out today 1/3 jamanetwork.com/journals/jamai…

📢 #AAFP’s president, president-elect and board chair are on Capitol Hill today advocating for policies to improve access to comprehensive #primarycare. On the agenda: protecting the #Medicaid program so beneficiaries have access to care, permanently reauthorizing the THCGME program and reforming #Medicare physician payment.
