@On3 @Clowfb If someone can play college football for 7–9 years, are we still talking about college sports… or just a developmental league with school branding?

NEW: The SEC's Greg Sankey tells @Clowfb he wants common-sense standards to limit 26–27-year-old college athletes with 7–9 years of eligibility: “It is a temporary period of time for a college student to be a college athlete, not a career athletic situation.” Exclusive: on3.com/news/sec-commi…

NEW: SEC commissioner Greg Sankey tells @Clowfb college athletics are in the middle of 'historic change' that will be 'messy' and 'uncomfortable'👀 "We're in the middle of historic change, and it's going to be messy. It's going to be uncomfortable. It's never going to be the way that it was, but doesn't have to be the way that it is." Story: on3.com/news/sec-commi…

@ShannonTerry Feels like another step toward the Power 2 eventually governing themselves. At that point college football basically becomes NFL lite.

📈As I've said, conferences MUST lead, and that's what Sankey is doing now. He lobbied for Congress, but college sports can't afford politicians "fixing" a systemically broken system. This is a complicated, multi-step problem, and this is the right next step. The closer the SEC and Big Ten models look, without collusion, the faster we get to a real fix for college sports.
Ross Dellenger@RossDellenger

An SEC president says the conference might be forced to “go our own way.” During key meetings in Nashville this week, the league’s executives are set to hold that discussion. More in our weekly sports biz column for @On3 - bit.ly/4syle8W

@Peaknuckel1 @NILnotNLI It’s not like Miami is making the title every year. Investing in players like Bain is exactly how programs get to CFP appearances and the $20M payouts that come with them.

Obviously he had a very poor tenure and Syracuse has to make a change. But we will find out with the next hire if Syracuse is truly a top level job in this era. I think it’s a jump ball.

And with that the Adrian Autry era mercifully comes to an end. Pound for pound one of the worst head coaches you'll ever come across. I know people are in love with G-Mac but I'm begging them to go external. Please go outside the family and try to restart this thing the right way. Do an actual coaching search!

@bportnoy15 This data is fascinating because it highlights the core issue --> the market is clearly moving toward associated entity deals, but the clearinghouse framework seems built to treat those deals as exceptions rather than the norm.

The College Sports Commission's new NIL Go report includes fascinating data around P4 dealmaking. P4 deals increased in scale, value and vessel (associated entities - MMR partners, apparel companies, etc) between Jan. + Feb. This window coincided w/ FB transfer portal (1/2-16).

@JoshWright1977 And now you’re starting to see states like Nebraska pass laws that directly conflict with that structure. Hard to see how a national clearinghouse works if states can override enforcement.

The College Sports Commission is a for-profit group consisting of NCAA member institutions that confer upon it the power to approve/reject NIL deals and limit compensation for college athletes. The CSC, separate from the NCAA, has serious antitrust exposure.

No matter how hard the President, the NCAA, conference commissioners and other high-powered people in college sports try, the old college sports world isn't coming back. Best to accept reality. There's a new world, and in it, the labor gets paid. sportico.com/law/analysis/2….

Nebraska’s NIL law is about to stress test the entire CSC/NIL Go framework. If a state says athletes can’t be penalized for earning NIL, how exactly does a national clearinghouse enforce anything? And bigger question... Who actually knows what NIL Go’s deal “approval” criteria even are?

@Vern_Funquist This is the part people ignore. The buyout isn’t just the buyout anymore. It’s buyout + new staff + roster retention + NIL commitments. The real reset cost is massive.

$30-35 million to pay his buyout, pay for a new coach and allocate promised resources for roster and NIL to a new coach isn’t worth it for the 4th most important sport at the school. It may suck, but it’s pretty simple.
Random SEC@therandomsec

South Carolina needs a total revamp of the athletic department. There is absolutely no world where you can justify keeping Lamont Paris for another year. The product that South Carolina has had in all sports compared to the fan support is unacceptable.

@ShannonTerry College sports have always been a meritocracy when it comes to coaches, facilities, and staff salaries. NIL exposed that the same market forces exist for players too.

Range: This salary level typically aligns with a CEO of a publicly traded company generating > $500M+ in annual revenue. The bottom line is that college sports have become a meritocracy, and schools are "willing" to spend -- and choose to spend -- above market to recruit and retain the best talent/staff/resources. This is not limited to NIL -- although NIL & pay-for-play get the most headlines.

Will the new college athletics model die before it turns one? Nebraska law prohibits college athletes from being penalized for earning NIL compensation. If the CSC penalizes Nebraska athletes for keeping money for “not cleared” deals, the Nebraska AG may sue the CSC.

I just genuinely have no idea how the NIL Go platform and CSC continue to operate deciding what deals to confirm or reject. Feels like it’s been waiting for a challenge like this. Was an insane premise from the start, as I’ve said a ton here.
Darren Heitner@heitner

Nebraska may be the state that brings down the College Sports Commission and NIL Go platform. State law (§48-3603) is unambiguous. College athletes can't be penalized for earning or even intending to earn #NIL compensation. That puts the CSC in an impossible position. Push too hard in arbitration and win? Congrats. You've just triggered a direct conflict with Nebraska state law, potentially invalidating enforcement mechanisms across the board. Back down? Your entire compliance framework loses credibility overnight.
