I never understood why Hollywood and the AAA gaming industry feel the need to make their good guys wear rags (which are most often not even practical for combat), drip their bad guys to the gills, then go surprised Pikachu when people prefer the bad guys. People like to look good, even in the direst of circumstances. It's that simple. Even if your faction are rebels/insurgents with few resources, they will strive to reach a combination of practicality and aesthetics. There are ways to make simple gear still look aesthetically pleasing. Simply look to WWII Resistance movements for reference, which are movements that Hollywood claims, but continuously fails to represent. They wore a combination of donated Allied equipment, captured Wehrmacht gear, and improvised civilian stuff. Oftentimes, they would implement traditional garb into their uniforms, as a way of defiance against the occupiers attempting to exterminate their culture. But nah, just make the good guys wear rags while fighting the most dripped out supersoldiers ever. Our audience cannot relate to the good guys otherwise. Then we'll call you fascist and rage on Twatter when people prefer the bad guys.
