Firstly, there is a week left for players to enter the tournament portal. Over time, it was inevitable that some teams would catch up with Duke by spending more. Louisville and Miami are tossing moola about as it grows on trees. UNC knows it has to open the purse as well. You spend to win in 2026. But you don't spend blindly or overpay; you have to have a budget, and the players are in control of much. There are classes, including transfer portals, with fits. There are years with less of that. So, guys can still enter the portal, and if a coach leaves, a seven-day window opens with players on that team. Agents control the environment until rules are implemented, and they often have inflated visions of their clients' immediate abilities. I only see about four serious candidates for Duke, and some of them have unsuitable timelines for a decision; others, perhaps on the team, may make some to sweat as well. In a sense, Scheyer is facing his most uncertain off-season to date, where much has to work out over time to field his usual top ten squad. This is the current nature of the beast, for the playing field constantly shifts, mainly due to money alone. Duke has to find the guys who want to play for them. Some years are loaded with them, others are not. The Blue Devils staff is trying to protect the advantage they built in the ACC, but when they miss on a guy who rejected them twice, some act as if it is over for them. They'll figure it out; it just might not be at the pace some want.

There are some folks acting like Jon Scheyer is failing this offseason. They don't have a clue what's going on behind the scenes. There are so many potential returning talents we haven't heard from yet. And Scheyer, set to welcome yet another top-ranked recruiting class, has never even come close to failing with his offseason efforts. He's aced those tests. Period. 😈🧠🦾 Any harsh criticism in that area is absolutely ridiculous. Those folks are just being ridiculous. Remember, Duke didn't really need any talent from the portal last year. The Blue Devils finished 35-3 this season and were No. 1 in the country entering the NCAA Tournament. Roster construction hasn't been an issue whatsoever. And this offseason has a long way to go. Jon Scheyer pretty much gets what he wants in this department. Why would anyone think he won't continue to? It baffles me.
