we're witnessing one of the worst debuts ever for Anthropic per LMArena, Opus 4.8 is at Sonnet 4.6 level, with thinking model almost tied with Gemini 2.5 Pro and it's not really as bad as leaderboard shows people loved the performance overall, but the "overthinking" part makes it that low on the leaderboard heavy tasks is a great use-case, while small, one-shot coding questions, older Claude versions can feel faster and more direct also, Anthropic always were into security, but the way Opus 4.8 feels slower being more cautious than needed is just not it Opus 4.6 is still king that able to balance performance and security to make it both smart and fast the odds for 4.8 debut being <1480 fell as low as ~1% just few days before it happened while the expectations were at ~1500 level in general, the gap between Anthropic and others is shrinking fast and we got at least 3 rumored releases by the end of June (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT) i still believe that 4.6 will stay up there, but rivals are ready to compete for that spot finally btw, this arena primarily measures overall user preference and experience, not raw capability or benchmark performance, so keep that in mind
