When downloading a csv from Baseball Savant 1) How would I specify a level other then MLB? or 2) specify a game_pk and have it hydrated with all the new columns? (bat_speed, swing_length, arm_angle, etc)

Yesterday, Baseball Savant released pitcher arm angle on a pitch-by-pitch basis!
You can download these data using the updated download_baseballsavant() function in the new v1.0.4 release of the sabRmetrics R package.

The Statcast Team has done it again! You can now get pitch-by-pitch arm angle from the Savant CSVs PyBaseball and/or BaseballR will likely need an update to download this data

When IVB can be misleading
I have been looking into arm angles as a way to try and quantify unexpected Movement
If a pitcher’s IVB is above what is average for their arm angles we might be able to infer it rides more than expected
I would appreciate thoughts on this

@mike_petriello The poor arm could be a reason he’s not converting more balls that he’s getting to but 2B is the best place to hide a weak arm

@mike_petriello How about creating a run value for positioning in addition to range? Then it would be more intuitive to read that he has very good positioning average range and whatever his hands rating is along with a weak arm

Let's start w this: he's rated well. He's a top-8 2B here, so it's not like he's considered as weak. Just not at the top. Why?

I have this R package called sabRmetrics that I wrote for me. It's good for downloading public data from Baseball Savant or the MLB Stats API, as well as estimating some fundamental models.

@tangotiger @DTonPirates My recollection is that Skenes has been fastball heavy the first time thru, leading to higher BABIP & HR% allowed, when the batters make contact. He's been using the FB less to get more efficient pitch counts & go deeper into games, using Splinker at 95-96 as main pitch.

@DTonPirates It'll be interesting to see his HR numbers as well. There's a relationship there, with how you handle HR.

Blows them away the first time thru, then manages to rely on his fielders the second time thru. Will be interesting whether that BABIP is sustainable...

Disappointed about that 1 inning because the Pirates could have definitely swept the Dodgers tonight if Heller wasn’t on this team.
Either way a great series against a great team.
