The easiest way to embarrass a congregation of twentieth century Christians is to ask them two simple questions: “When is the last time you personally led another person to Jesus Christ?” and “When is the last time you tried?” -W.E. Sangster, British Methodist Preacher

I grew up southern Baptist. Spent 17 years of my life in church 3 times a week. Have read the Bible front to back more times than most pastors. Became an agnostic pagan for 20 odd years. Reopened the Bible when I was hired to cowrite a book on biblical masculinity (became a huge success). Became Catholic that same year. Reading the Bible and finally understanding it always leads home to Rome.
James Baird@james_d_baird

and when Catholics learn to read, they become Protestant! when i ask converts why they left Rome (100s at my church), the universal answer is: “I read the Bible”

Catholics need to learn the word Protestant doesn’t mean non denominational or non Catholics. Protestantism is a sect or type of Christianity that that consists of 7 denominations. Baptist,Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist, Dutch Reform and Lutheran

@reformzoomer Protestantism is not a warehouse of seven different denominations. It is a return to the ancient church of old and a recapturing of the original doctrines of the faith.

Here’s something I’ve learned this week. The fellow regarded as the best Methodist systematic theologian of the 19th century was not shy with regard to the language of “imputation.”

In the past, I would sometimes appeal to the “plain meaning” of various scriptural texts. I’ve stopped doing that. Not because I don’t think the Bible speaks plainly at times. Nor because I’ve given up on the perspicuity of scripture with regard to its teaching on salvation. I haven’t. No, I’ve stopped appealing to the “plain meaning” because that phrase is often used to discourage serious engagement in biblical interpretation. The “plain meaning” claim is frequently deployed to avoid dealing with legitimate challenges to whatever reading is supposed to be so certainly clear. It’s sometimes used rhetorically to suggest that one interpretation of the Bible is so obvious that we don’t need to do the hard work of exegesis and hermeneutics to understand it. If someone insists their view represents the “plain meaning” of some scriptural text, that’s your clue to scrutinize their interpretation all the more rigorously. Maybe it is the plain meaning, but you can’t know until you do the work.

Classical Christology is just so elegant. Here’s William Burt Pope, the Methodist theologian, once again.

@BillyBoy97970 @mporeilly The word's meaning cannot be taken alone and outside the context in which it was intended. Holy does mean 'separate', but, it is not separated from it's intended meaning by the User.

@SidtheSquid37 @ShaneRaynor These days, especially in our contemporary setting and very recent history, I prefer the brotherhood of believers differently gifted by the Holy Spirit.

I get your meaning, but John decidedly retained the traditional three-fold English Ordinal in his Sunday Service. His is a mere change of terms (priest = presbyter = elder). Elsewhere, he makes his preference for the term "elder" known, but he means the same office. Methodism was intended to have priests (elders). A recovery of the Sunday Service/BCP/Ordinal among the Methodists would be a theologically and historically clarifying venture.

This. ⬇️ Methodism has ordained clergy, but as a tradition, we have never called them priests. From the beginning of the movement, Methodists have emphasized the priesthood of all believers. Yet another one of those things Methodists hold in tension.
@markdtooley@markdtooley

Of course Wesley was Anglican priest, but Methodist churches don’t have priests. The Holiness tradition within Methodism has been ordaining women since mid-19th century due to their understanding of sanctification.
