The trade for AJ Brown has been unique from the start. New England reached out long ago and put a deal on the table: if someone else comes along and offers you more, get back to us. If they offer you less, our deal is still on the table. Patriots often operate this way with FAs as well (think Devin McCourty). What makes the situation even more interesting is the cap situation and how it impacts June 1st of course, which may make a potential agreement even more strange with how it goes down (say, Eagles want picks this Draft but can't make trade official yet).

I think there’s still some meat on the bone with AJ and his vertical game but Boutte gives that element right now and you can keep the picks. What’s the best case scenario? 2,000 yards between Romeo and AJ? Leveraging multiple picks for a theoretical 500 yards of offense isn’t the most sound investment. I like Brown but he’s gearing into his possession receiver era and they need to be smart about the cost of that. Are we passing on a round 1 receiver in a good receiver class so we can trade the rights to a potential future 2027 rookie receiver after June 1st for a guy that is good (but not great anymore) and doesn’t lineup with Maye’s timeline? There’s more dominoes here than just add the receiver that is likely past his prime and everything is cool.

I assumed a lot of AJ Brown’s regression on after the catch metrics were due to the Eagles running him on more hitch routes in 2025 so I isolated a YAC friendly route (slants) to see Browns trends the last four seasons. 📉 (data via @FantasyPtsData)

@PatriotsCLNS @GregABedard We won’t know until a deal is actually made. If he eats the contract and gives up anything beyond a 2 and a 4 definitely a blind spot. Keep in mind everybody moved on at the current ask nobody was interested. So basically Vrabel is bidding against himself.
