Rebuilding Oregon Education: How do we repair a failed system to promote success? America’s schools are failing. And they have been for decades. It’s a multi-causal problem that in the aggregate stems from misunderstanding what education is for. Why did America’s Founders give birth to public education — a revolutionary idea? To sustain the nation. Without it, the young Republic could not be “kept”. This is why public education is so important. There’s no Republic without it. oregonedproject.substack.com/p/rebuilding-o… Read the new broadside on American Education (15-20 minutes): oregoned.info/amed.pdf

@educator4ever36 @teachthemx3 Actually, the fact that most teachers use methods that have been shown to be ineffective [reading] places a much greater burden to address that than the author admits. Poorly reasoned — as if “the system” is real and not an abstraction.

Top scholar says evidence for special education inclusion is 'fundamentally flawed' The core of Fuchs’ critique is that previous researchers failed to distinguish between students with disabilities who are sent to separate special education classrooms and students with disabilities who are included in general education classrooms. They are fundamentally different. Children who are placed in separate settings for a significant part or most of the day tend to have more severe disabilities and academic struggles. It should be no surprise to anyone that higher achieving students with milder disabilities end up with higher test scores than students who initially had lower test scores and more severe disabilities. That isn’t proof that a child with a disability learns more in a general education classroom. hechingerreport.org/proof-points-s…

🚨 BREAKING: INVESTIGATE JAMA! Somalian-born State Sen. Kayse Jama tells ICE agents to “Get the Hell Out!” — while funneling MILLIONS in Oregon taxpayer dollars straight to his own nonprofit (Unite Oregon) and putting his wife on the board. This is taxpayer-funded fraud. Oregon families deserve better. I’m demanding a full federal + congressional investigation into Jama NOW. Psychological scientist J.D. Haltigan told me the feminine impulse to be empathetic has been weaponized. “We’ve come to basically hijack the feminine ethic of care.” “And if a society becomes completely feminine, all kinds of chaos will ensue.” “Because you don’t have any sort of rule-based, lawful, statistically-minded, quantitatively-focused orientation to why we have laws, why we have rules, why we need order, why we need immigration law, and so forth.” “Masculinity is what will track, personality-wise, with systemization, and femininity is sort of the analogy with empathization.” But this feminization has become dominant in many areas of society with major effects. @JDHaltigan

The cows drink from the stream. The rain falls whether there's a cow here or not." Activist: "It's still water consumption." Farmer: "Should I stop the rain falling on my field?" Activist: "Grow crops instead. More efficient." Farmer: "This is a 35-degree slope in the Welsh hills. Show me the crop." Activist: "Technology..." Farmer: "To make tractors climb mountains?" Here's a study on exactly that point: The proportion of academic words used by teachers during the school day is a significant predictor of student vocabulary growth and reading achievement. Research indicates that higher teacher usage of sophisticated, academic language directly correlates to higher student vocabulary scores at the end of the year, particularly for language-minority students. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37541302/

An excellent account by @mattwridley of the life of 'pseudoscientist,' Paul Ehrlich, and the immense negative impact his writings and pronouncements had on the world. I call him a pseudoscientist because, as far as I can tell, he never once ran the three-cycle Scientific Method Engine: 1. Hypothesis 2. Data 3. Data-informed amended hypothesis Repeat. Oregon’s education crisis can’t wait. Right now, our state ranks last in the nation in fourth-grade reading. That should be a wake-up call for all of us. When kids aren’t reading at grade level by fourth grade, it becomes much harder for them to succeed in every subject that follows. The consequences ripple through their education, their careers, and the future strength of our state. That’s why on day one as Governor, I would declare a state of emergency on education. The good news is there is a proven path forward. By refocusing on phonics and the science of reading, we can give our children the strong literacy foundation they need to succeed. Oregon’s kids are capable of incredible things. It’s time our education system gives them the tools to reach their potential. (Credit to @kgwnews )

This point can't be made enough, particularly in response to "gotcha" claims calling into question gains made in Mississippi, et al. No one has cracked the code on 8th grade reading. And the answer likely has less to do with policy than pedagogy: aei.org/op-eds/crackin…
Chad Aldeman@ChadAldeman

Massachusetts’ experience is actually pretty typical nationwide. The “Southern Surge” states look better than most—but no state is really excelling in 8th grade reading: chadaldeman.com/p/has-any-stat…
