"Donald Trump has it out for NATO. He has it out for America's European allies," said @sbg1.
"It's very hard to see a scenario here where this doesn't represent a big blow to American international power and standing in many ways."

Canada’s latest package delivers strong new sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet, including 100 tankers. It reinforces the pressure over Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine. This sanctions package also targets Iranian drone manufacturers.
Important and timely steps. Both Russia and the Iranian regime must feel the pressure and must be stopped. Thank you to @MarkJCarney and Canada!

Trump's demand that Ukraine hand their own land to Russia is a shameful betrayal and a gift to Putin.
Giving in to Putin would threaten Ukraine, Europe, and the United States.
America must stand with the brave Ukrainian people — not reward Putin for his unprovoked brutality.

@Robert_E_Kelly @19_forty_five Before Trump, the United States had allies, but tariffs, the threat to Greenland, the disregard for NATO and the coziness with Putin have weakened America's image. You can build drones, but without long time friends the battles are more challenging.

My latest for @19_forty_five
The biggest lesson China will draw from the Iran War is that the US military is too small and too ‘exquisite’ - the navy has too few ships, missile defense is too costly, and so on - resulting in overextension

spot-on, from @anneapplebaum
Money quote:
"Donald Trump does not think strategically. Nor does he think historically, geographically, or even rationally. He does not connect actions he takes on one day to events that occur weeks later. He does not think about how his behavior in one place will change the behavior of other people in other places."
"He does not consider the wider implications of his decisions. He does not take responsibility when these decisions go wrong. Instead, he acts on whim and impulse, and when he changes his mind—when he feels new whims and new impulses—he simply lies about whatever he said or did before."

Dear @LindseyGrahamSC and @realDonaldTrump
Let’s stop the spin.
Europe is not “failing” the United States.
The United States has been failing its allies.
Since 2017, President Trump has attacked NATO, insulted allies, and treated partnerships built over generations as disposable. And still—Europe and Canada responded with discipline:
We rearmed.
We increased defense spending.
We stepped up.
Not because of you—but despite you.
And while doing so, the President has repeatedly shown more willingness to engage constructively with Vladimir Putin—a dictator waging war in Europe—than with the allies who have fought and died alongside American forces for decades.
Let that sink in.
Now you ask: where is allied support on Iran?
Here is the answer:
You don’t get loyalty after years of disrespect.
The United States launched military action without real consultation, without a shared strategy, and without building a coalition. We have seen this before—and we have paid the price.
European and Canadian soldiers have died in wars where strategy was unclear, shifting, or simply absent.
We will not repeat that mistake.
Alliances are built on trust, not demands. On strategy, not impulse. On respect, not rhetoric.
You broke that foundation.
Now you are seeing the consequences.
And this is not just about Europe. Support is eroding inside the United States as well.
That should worry you.
Enough is enough.

Trump spending the last year threatening, insulting, and alienating our allies — only to now turn around and beg them for help — really is a moment of pure political karma.
For decades after World War II, one of America’s greatest sources of strength wasn’t just our military or economy. It was our alliances. NATO. Partnerships across Europe and Asia. A global network of allies who trusted the United States because we stood with them and they stood with us.
That system of alliances helped keep the world stable for generations.
Trump spent a single year torching those relationships — attacking allies, telling them we didn’t need them, and declaring that America had already “won” without them.
Now, suddenly, he wants their help.
The nerve.
You don’t spend months telling your closest partners to go to hell and then expect them to line up when you snap your fingers. Alliances are built on trust. Trump burned that trust down and now the entire world can see the consequences.

@Daractenus I rammed tariffs in your face, but now I beg for a team effort...
