For days now, posts from Colombia, Japan, Spain and many other countries have been appearing in my X timeline — all in fluent German. The AI is simply translating the voices of the world for me. At first I was irritated, almost suspicious. But exactly at the moment when war in the Middle East once again threatens to escalate, the miracle of this function hits me with full force. A goosebumps moment that brings tears to my eyes. For years, the media and politicians have been feeding us the same mantra: The Russians are evil. The Iranians want to destroy Israel. They only served us the voices we were supposed to hear — and allowed to hear. Yet now something immense is happening: Ordinary people are finding their voice. A real, unfiltered, deeply personal voice. Suddenly we learn that Russian mothers love their children with the same tender fear as we do. That Iranians despise their regime, yet are not willing to be wiped out by foreign nuclear weapons in exchange. We always knew abstractly that behind governments and headlines there are human beings — with the same fears, hopes and longings as you and I. Now, however, we can actually hear them. They are tweeting through the ether — a mighty Dawn Chorus, a morning choir of millions of throats, heralding the sunrise of a new world. A world in which the individual finally becomes visible — no longer just as a mass, but as a living, feeling being. If the Nobel Peace Prize were not so stained with blood from all the wrong recipients, one would have to award it to @elonmusk. For in a world that was moving closer to the great war with every passing day, he has quietly accomplished an immense miracle of peace. It is tweeting through the digital ether: “I have nothing against you. You are valuable. Let us exchange our feelings, our stories, our goods in peace.” It is the tweeting at the dawn of a new day.
