New from @malutansey group: investigation of shared and distinct gut microbiome features between inflammatory bowel disease and PD. Both diseases show depletion in short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria—depletion of these microbes may enhance PD risk? nature.com/articles/s4153…

Our Stanley Fahn Awardee Briana De Miranda delivered a beautiful Keynote Address last week at ASAP's 2025 CRN Collaborative Meeting. It was a wonderful overview of the known environmental risk factors for PD. Well done Briana!

Intriguingly, previous work has demonstrated that these LC-NE neurons are vulnerable to degeneration in Parkinson's disease, suggesting a potential mechanistic link to PD-related sleep disturbances. Congrats Dan! #sec-3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Shoutout to 2021 Postdoc Fellow Dan Silverman for his paper showing that noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus (LC-NE neurons) regulate the propensity to sleep after wakefulness, known as "sleep pressure," via an A2a-adrenergic receptor-dependent mechanism (link below).
