🎯"The fact that we don't have good, reliable & valid measures for things like conceptual understanding should be alarming to everybody because you cannot do science on things you cannot observe." You can't measure if your intervention is working, nor can you make claims about conceptual understanding, when you don't know what it means.

If we *could* teach all kids "mature" math skills and then want to argue that this is better long term than memorization, fine. But we can't. So we end up with kids who can't manage the "mature" skills and haven't memorized.
