Cod being abundant has had a long culinary hangover across the world, not just here. E.g. the fish in ackee and saltfish being very non-local to the carribean.
Agreed that we should eat more local fish though big up mackerel and almost every type of edible flatfish

Fish lovers are being told to buy hake instead of cod as the population plunges. Let’s get one thing straight. It is *stupefyingly ridiculous* that cod is a national British dish. Why is a fish that is caught in Norway/Russia/Iceland and processed in China and then deep fried to mask its watery, insipid texture considered the epitome of Britishness? While we are reviving Cornish hake, why don’t we end this bewildering habit of catching world-class seafood like spider crabs and langoustines and shipping it straight off to Europe because ewww “we don’t like the look of it”. Also what about delicious, meaty gurnard, abundant in English waters yet immediately exported to France and Spain? I had one in Cornwall once, and it was the most glorious fish I have ever tasted. I for one would be thrilled to see it in the supermarkets and restaurants.

Many people treat land valuation as an unsolved problem, but South Korea values all the land annually, down to the individual parcel, gets it done in five months flat, and posts all the values publicly.

honestly it was crazy political manouvring from Oxbridge to manage to suppress Durham having englands third university for so long when it was absolutely racing ahead of them in scholarly achievement

Architects don't even apply avantgarde design to >100000 sqft monument-scale institutional and corporate buildings any more they just design a slightly edgy house extension and look at you like this

It appears in a sandwich in Fleming’s For Your Eyes Only – sparingly scraped, one assumes, rather than shaken or stirred.
It was served up to Bertie Wooster for a bachelor’s breakfast.
As Andrew Webb observed in Food Britannia (2011), it is not ‘a product for lavish slathering, but for gentlemanly deportment’.
It offered proper English cachet, and an air of refinement. The height of good paste.
How very sad it’s gone.

@PRAVDA_KECHB A half decent design for a new town or similar (Gibbert masterplanned Harlow) but hardly of the scale and grandeur for the site - the main boulevard of a big city. Oasis was a big part of my teenage years though

the Arrakis-like northern part of the Square will be missed, as will Makan's fantastic syrian cuisine, and the crazed den of the Oasis market even if as a unit it largely failed to make a positive contribution to Birmingham's #urbanism
