The assailants, Ismail Siyan and Shivan Azad, who reside in the UK, present themselves as opposition activists but their recent political alignments raise questions about their motives. During the October 20 elections, they actively campaigned on social media for Lahur Sheikh Jangi and his People's Front list. When Zekri Zebari, the head of Sheikh Jangi's faction in Duhok, visited London, they welcomed him with flowers. These two claim to be opposition activists and previously gained attention by throwing eggs at Prime Minister Masrour Barzani alongside others. However, their actions and rhetoric since then suggest a clear alignment with Lahur Sheikh Jangi, as evidenced by their activities during the October elections. Their behavior highlights a striking contradiction. They justify attacking Shaswar Abdulwahid—an opposition leader who has never held power—by claiming to oppose everyone. Yet, they openly support Sheikh Jangi, a key pillar of power in Kurdistan’s political establishment until 2021. This reflects a broader trend among some self-proclaimed activists who position themselves as being “against everyone” while selectively aligning with established power figures. Such an approach undermines genuine opposition efforts and ultimately serves the status quo by rendering meaningful critique ineffective. While Shaswar's politics certainly warrant scrutiny, this physical assault – particularly after he provided his address for an arranged meeting – crosses both ethical and legal boundaries. Such actions not only delegitimize peaceful political activism but also constitute a criminal offense where they live.
