Enzymes are proteins secreted by the pancreas to break down the food we eat. Often, pancreatic tumors prevent this process, causing enzyme insufficiency. Treatments for #pancreaticcancer can also be a cause. Malabsorption of (inability to absorb) nutrients due to enzyme insufficiency can lead to much discomfort and weight loss — symptoms that can dramatically affect patients’ quality of life and their ability to tolerate treatment. But taking prescription pancreatic enzymes, also known as pancreatic exocrine replacement therapy (PERT), functions to replenish enzymes and alleviate related symptoms. According to PanCAN Patient Services findings based on patient feedback, many are not told about their potential need for pancreatic enzymes and how critical they are for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. When they are aware, they often have questions. In FY26, the PanCAN community — that’s you! — raised its voice and Congress listened. Lawmakers rejected proposed cuts and instead delivered increases for cancer research funding. That victory was not accidental. It was the direct result of passionate people contacting their members of Congress and demanding action. For months, David H. experienced mild fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort and some weight loss — symptoms he’d rationalize away due to his busy schedule as a dad, partner and school principal. Although David could ignore what was happening, a good friend refused to and urged him to go to a doctor. He’s glad he did. After bloodwork and scans, David was diagnosed with stage IV #pancreaticcancer. The news, understandably, was life changing — he’s been in active treatment ever since. Early in this journey, David connected with PanCAN Patient Services. He says PanCAN became a lifeline. He shares, “My experience with them was human and action oriented. No fluff — just clear information, real support and consistent follow-through, which was especially important during a time when uncertainty was high and decisions mattered. Patient Services helped bring structure to the chaos.” To give back to the place that gave him so much, David participates in #PanCANPurpleStride New Jersey with team Principal Herman’s Heroes. Last year they raised nearly $27,000 to support PanCAN research and programs like Patient Services. They’ve set another ambitious fundraising goal this year. “PurpleStride is power in motion. It’s community with purpose — survivors, caregivers, families and allies moving together. What stands out most is the energy there. No pity. Just strength, visibility and collective resolve.” Another way David gives back is through a T-shirt line with his son called Leader. Ten dollars of every purchase goes to PanCAN. He says the company is built on identity, resilience and impact, with the goal of inspiring those young and older to be a leader in their community. “Leadership doesn’t pause for a diagnosis. I approach treatment the same way I led my career: ask hard questions, build the right team, stay informed and move forward even when the terrain is brutal. Cancer doesn’t redefine leadership. Diarrhea is a common side effect experienced by many patients with #pancreaticcancer. Certain foods may be easier on digestion and less likely to worsen diarrhea, including: 🥦 Low-fat foods that are gentle on digestion, like skinless chicken or turkey, fish, egg whites, tofu, oats, rice, pasta and cooked vegetables. 🍌 Foods that contain soluble fiber such as oat fiber, and high pectin foods like applesauce and bananas. 🥛 If lactose intolerance is present or develops, it may help to consume plant-based milk alternatives, such as soy or rice milk, or dairy products with added Lactaid® (lactase). One of the most common conditions associated with #pancreaticcancer may also be one of the least understood: Cancer cachexia. Sometimes known as wasting syndrome, cancer cachexia is the loss of 5% or more of body weight in six months. It impacts almost 90% of people living with pancreatic cancer.
