🚨 I'm thrilled to announce that I have officially launched my new newsletter, Against the Left. 🚀 This newsletter will exclusively feature response pieces to left-wing articles and videos, all from a principled libertarian perspective. 🧵Let me tell you about it: ⤵️

Probably one of the most sobering charts I've seen in the last year. Yes, we have better technology than our parents, higher incomes, and so on. But we are also facing challenges and cultural shifts that they could never imagine, and it's important to be honest about that.

@PatrickC1995 What is the supply management cartel? Sounds sort of self explanatory but I have not heard of them before. What is their deal? I know we have a dairy board that basically makes it difficult to get grass fed dairy products from other countries.

since Rothbard's MES is a foundational text, but very long, should I create a weekly/daily thread explaining each chapter of the book ?

@itchylol The dairy cartel loudly complains that they would be undercut by American dairy if the tariffs were lifted. I don't know of any better proof than that.

@PatrickC1995 hol up there. you skipped the first part of your argument, where you prove that grocery prices are artificially inflated before you later go on to claim the cause of inflated prices

@PatrickC1995 Food production companies getting more and more concentrated into fewer big conglomerates is another huge problem

@tariffmebaby I don't know about you but milk, chicken, and eggs are not a small part of my weekly grocery bill. Also, we don't need to do either supply management or subsidies. We could just have a free market.

@PatrickC1995 Supply Management applies to a very small segment of grocery, and we do it instead of subsidizing farmers the way the U.S. does.

@Tusharufo2 With a few exceptions, I have not been satisfied with the libertarian literature that I have read on these topics.

@PatrickC1995 What's one example of market failure? Environment, information asymmetry or "public goods" etc. have already been dealt in libertarian literature. I still fail to find a good example of market failure.

If libertarians want to win the battle of ideas, we need to do a much better job of addressing the market failure argument. I discuss in my latest piece for Against the Left (link in comments).

@_tokuninai Yes I'd say we've never had full laissez faire, certainly not at scale in a developed economy.

@PatrickC1995 Of course you could say that you've never had full laissez faire capitalism or some ideal, but the bare requirements for it have indeed appeared multiple times in history and today.

Since neither capitalism or socialism are a switch that is turned on/off, we are left with a spectrum. 100% socialism = communism. This has been tried many times. 100% capitalism is the absence of regulations, central banks, government monetar monpoly etc. We can therefore honestly say that full socialism has been tried, and perhaps at most 50% capitalism has been tried. Full capitalism = no government.

@follynomics "I believed the libertarians when they told me libertarianism would bring about utopia..." Meanwhile, not a single libertarian ever has promised utopia.

A lot of you will rightfully make fun of me for this but I genuinely believed the Misesian-Randian optimism that a minimal state + free markets solve all human conflict… until I read Tiroles principal–agent problem in one of my last grad school classes
