For years, big tech companies have quietly built billion dollar businesses off user behavior, browsing habits, preferences, attention span and digital footprints while the average user got nothing in return. At least with apps like this, there’s some form of compensation. You are knowingly opting in and getting paid for the value your data generates. That’s better than being unknowingly farmed for free. But here’s the uncomfortable side. Most people still do not fully understand what “sharing your data” means. Your habits are incredibly revealing. What you search, what you watch, how long you stay on certain content, what you click, what you ignore, what time you sleep, what interests you, what influences your buying decisions, even patterns in your routine. That information is insanely valuable at scale. And when you look at it that way, being paid a few dollars can start to feel less like empowerment and more like selling something valuable for pennies because you don’t know its true worth. That doesn’t automatically make it bad. It just means people should understand the tradeoff before jumping in. Easy money is nice. Informed consent is better.
