I am talking about Gutenberg and early type-manufacture (and The Catholicon) in Oxford on Thursday evening. If anyone would like a zoom link it will be available from the Society's Secretary (contact via the website). #OxfordBibliographicalSociety

@plantinmoretus Some French printing manuals of the eighteenth century refer to dogskin as the best leather for covering ink-balls, but it was used rarely, if at all. Any soft leather could be used, and sheep was most common in England.

Did you know that - contradictory to common belief & #earlymodern manuals - the printer’s ink balls used in the Officina Plantiniana were not made out of dogskin? The ledgers in the family’s business archive only mentions the frequent purchases of cowskin for their dabbers!
