They are giving out of their massive surplus to buy public applause. It is a calculated PR move. Then, a destitute widow walks up and drops in two microscopic copper coins (lepta). Christ immediately stops and points to her. He tells the Apostles that she just gave infinitely more than all the billionaires combined. Why? Because she didn't give her spare change. She gave everything she had to live on. Modern faith is obsessed with comfortable, calculated philanthropy. We give the King our leftover time, our leftover money, and our leftover energy, and we expect a crown in return. Traditional faith is terrifying. God does not want a polite 10% of your excess. He demands the absolute, reckless surrender of your entire life.

According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a humble donkey into Jerusalem fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah that the King would come "gentle and riding on a donkey." As He rode, the crowds laid palm branches and cloaks before Him, hailing Him as King. However, the image points out a hidden symbolism: He was already riding upon a cross. Most donkeys possess a "cross-shaped" marking on their backs, a vertical stripe down the spine intersected by a horizontal stripe across the shoulders. Jesus Christ literally rode into jerusalem on a cross and left carrying one. legend says that the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem was so devoted to its Master that it followed Him all the way to the foot of the Cross on Good Friday. Stricken with grief and unable to bear the sight of the Lord’s suffering, the donkey turned away. At that moment, the shadow of the Cross fell across its back, leaving a permanent mark as a sign of God’s blessing on the humble animal for its service.
