In winter, wild brown trout spawn in rivers across the country. The nests ("redds") can often be seen from the riverbank, but a great way to spot them is from above. Here @ProfJGrey takes us on a tour of a River Aire tributary - how many redds can you see? youtu.be/gyCl60tIVfY

We had a spotty surprise on a recent visit to Wensleydale in North Yorkshire. While some of the local rivers have dry periods, we wouldn't usually expect to see one without water in the autumn time. Here, @ProfJGrey encounters a very tenacious fish 🐟

Great to see the @WildTroutTrust team @ProfJGrey doing more great work! This “de-knackering” of our rivers and streams is what the team do, with profound benefits.

When we enhance river habitat, we're always looking ahead to future conditions. Like many rivers, the upper tributaries of the Aire were noticeably low this year. But when autumn rain arrives, @ProfJGrey demonstrates the value of reconnecting the rivers to their floodplains 💧

Our @ProfJGrey has been busy surveying fish species in several Yorkshire rivers, teaching students about the value of long-term monitoring. By assessing fish populations before and after habitat enhancement works, we get a clearer picture of each project's impact 🐟

We've been back in lovely Cumbria for more habitat assessments! 🐟@ProfJGrey has been advising on the Penrith to Kendal Arc Landscape Recovery Project, this time on the River Sprint. This is a fantastic landscape, with lots of potential to improve the health of its rivers.

Little wonder the River Sprint is sprinty! Historic & maintained channel realignment & straightening serves only to keep it conveying water at its sprintiest pace d/s to Kendal.... @WildTroutTrust exploring opps to unshackle & re-engage the floodplain #SlowTheFlow #restoration

33/60 @QuantumFreshWtr sites in SW & W England and Wales have now been sampled. Next stop N England and Scotland! By focusing on sheep, beef and dairy farmed catchments the national picture we are building of their impacts on UK rivers will help inform better policy & management

When wild brown trout were lost from the upper part of the River Mel, a mill prevented the river from being repopulated. Now, our translocation project with @EnvAgency is returning this iconic fish to its native habitat: youtu.be/-qEuc5zFm_I

IMPORTANT. Please sign and repost. This petition is based on our recent research which found that English rivers are universally contaminated with these potent neurotoxic insecticides, the source being treated dogs and cats. Link in comment below.

It’s #NationalInsectWeek! Insects are essential to ecosystems - pollinating plants, breaking down organic matter, enriching soil & feeding birds, fish & mammals. Enjoy these pictures from a recent site visit, there were signs of insect life everywhere you looked!🐝 🐜 🐛
