Astronomy Picture of the Day
How much of planet Earth is made of water? Very little, actually. Although oceans of water cover about 70 percent of Earth's surface, these oceans are shallow compared to the Earth's radius. The featured illustration shows what would happen if all of the water on or near the surface of the Earth were bunched up into a ball. The radius of this ball would be only about 700 kilometers, less than half the radius of the Earth's Moon, but slightly larger than Saturn's moon Rhea which, like many moons in our outer Solar System, is mostly water ice. The next smallest ball depicts all of Earth's liquid fresh water, while the tiniest ball shows the volume of all of Earth's fresh-water lakes and rivers. How any of this water came to be on the Earth and whether any significant amount is trapped far beneath Earth's surface remain topics of research. Happy Friday, Longhorns! In today’s issue: + @DHSgov announced on April 9 a guidance to screen non-citizens’ social media accounts for “antisemitic activity.” + The second annual Austin Texas Book Trail will invite the community to explore and support 29 local independent bookstores this weekend + COLUMN: Columnist Maria Vazquez reflects on her experience as a Mexican immigrant with U.S. citizenship and urges @UTAustin students to advocate for families impacted by recent changes in immigration policy and prevent being complicit in increasing division All this and more: #1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thedailytexan.com/2025/04/11/dt-… In today’s issue of the Texan, the original headline implied that the visas of current UT students were revoked. While the Texan was unable to independently verify that the visas of current students have been terminated, other publications have reported that UT graduates’ student visas have been revoked. The Texan regrets this error.

If an alien in a galaxy 65 million light years away is looking at us through a telescope right now, then they are seeing the dinosaurs 🦖🦕 Dinosaurs appeared about 250 to 235 million years ago and became extinct 66 million years ago in the end-Cretaceous extinction. This means that if someone observes us from a galaxy far away, roughly 65 to 240 million light-years away, is likely that they see an image of our planet from the time when dinosaurs actually lived here. #Facts #Aliens

Kepler-186f: Another Earth Discovered Astronomers have officially discovered an Earth-like planet, Kepler-186f, located in the habitable "Goldilocks zone" of its star—where conditions could allow liquid water to exist on its surface. This remarkable exoplanet lies 500 light-years away in the Cygnus constellation. The Goldilocks zone refers to the orbital region around a star where temperatures are just right for planetary bodies with sufficient atmospheric pressure to sustain water, a critical ingredient for life as we know it. While there are an estimated 40 billion Earth-sized planets in our galaxy, Kepler-186f is the first to be identified within its star's habitable zone, making it a landmark discovery in the search for potentially life-supporting worlds beyond our solar system.
