A really amazing journalist (#technology, #AI, #computing, and more) told me last week that he's been "telling anyone who would listen that to understand what was going on around @OpenAI they needed to read your book!" So in case you haven't... ;) amazon.com/Apocalyptic-AI…

🚨 Sam Altman: there's a very important thing happening. I did not expect 3 or 6 months ago to be at this point we're at now” We now have a confirmed reason why OpenAI pulled out of Sora and it was as most of us expected - because they needed to concentrate all of their compute and product capacity into their next generation of models and automated agents. Sam says: "We have a few times in our history realized something really important is working or about to work so well that we have to stop a bunch of other projects. In fact, this was the original thing happened with GPT-3. We had a whole portfolio of bets at the time... we shut down many projects that were working well like robotics... so that we could concentrate our compute, our researchers, our effort into this thing that we said, okay, there's a very important thing happening." "I did not expect 3 or 6 months ago to be at this point we're at now, where something very big and important is about to happen again with this next generation of models and the agents they can power." "We need to concentrate our compute and our product capacity into these next generation of automated researchers and companies... the note under the note is it's about compute. It's always about compute."

Professor Robert Geraci’s new book, Futureproofing Humanity, explores how AI, genetic engineering, and space exploration are shaping humanity’s response to existential risk. A powerful look at the intersection of technology, belief, and future.

I don’t actually think there is that much truth here, @jason. We certainly have not reached AGI by any of the traditional definitions. (See agidefinition.agi w @hendrycks @Yoshua_Bengio and myself and many others.) [Current AI systems still have huge problems with visual comprehension, significant problems with hallucinations, continual learning etc.] And it’s not clear how much of current job loss is actually attributable to AI. And the idea that lots of stuff is going to become free is hardly plausible when the big AI companies don’t even want to pay for the IP they are hoovering at mass scale. They are not going to share a penny more than an angry public makes them share.
@jason@Jason

Here’s the truth: we’ve already reached AGI — we just haven’t implemented it broadly. Millions of jobs are being lost as we speak. Entire careers will be retired. The rich and powerful investors and founders who implement AGI will get bizarrely rich beyond what makes sense. It will break people's brains on both sides. It’s gonna suck for a lot of our friends and family, who aren’t obsessed with their careers, because things are moving so fast they won’t have even left the starting gate by the time the awards are handed out. We’re gonna have to solve for a lot of second- and third-order effects, some of which will suck (job loss) and some of which will be awesome. AI will create free/cheap energy, free education, cheaper and better food, homes that build themselves and medicine that makes you as healthy as a 30-year-old when you’re 100. … change is hard, but humans are the most adaptable species nature has ever created. We can figure it out.

🚨 Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei: “We are so close to these models reaching the level of human intelligence, and yet there doesn't seem to be a wider recognition in society of what's about to happen … There hasn't been a public awareness of the risks.”

@GaryMarcus First it was "just describe it right" then it was "make it faster" then it was "scale it up." Happily, religious faith can always find another path! Unhappily. that comes at cost for everyone.

@tedlieu I've spent 20 years writing about this religion of AI. We need new myths and stories for our technology if we're going to live through the current moment.

The below claim is both stupid and arrogant. It’s stupid because any intelligence that can simulate our universe would be far smarter than AGI or ASI. And it’s arrogant to think we’re super special in the universe because we learned how to run linear algebra equations at scale.
