Antidepressants can lead to physical changes in the genitals. Dr. Ahad Waraich, through the use of ultrasounds, has detected penile scarring (fibrosis) in young men experiencing #PSSD. The penile tissue of young PSSD patients usually resembles that of an 80-year-old person.

We will have a podcast addressing PSSD this week. Sadly, I have had so many desperate people asking us to expose the lack of transparency regarding sexual dysfunction and SSRIs. Still, there are doctors fighting to hide this devastating and sometimes lifelong side effect. Why?

(1/2) Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. After taking the antidepressant mirtazapine for one month, Kata from Hungary developed PSSD, memory problems and other severe persistent symptoms. She posted this video on November 24, 2017 and took her own life on October 1, 2018.

The story sounds like instigation of mania and psychosis rather than sexual disfunction. The former is something we know about and screen for (in terms of premorbid potential or active disorder) in these studies and thankfully have not seen, likely due to that screening. Sexual disfunction is certainly something to keep an eye on. I don't think it has been reported in open AE reporting but would be important to take seriously for sure. Thanks for posting this comment and the story.

Presumably investors are disappointed by the modest effect. Roughly similar in size to TMS and half the size of Spravato. Still way bigger than typical SSRI effects, and clinically meaningful IMO. Of course a caveat is this is all judging from press release. Fortunately FDA doesn't require huge effects for approval. Strongly suspect effects would be larger in 1st line depression treatment as opposed to treatment resistant depression. Although treatment resistant depression might seem politically more attractive, I've always thought psychedelics have promise as 1st line treatments because the adverse effects are typically more time limited and while under medical observation. Upon approval, why not try psychedelics 1st and then try SSRIs or something else if it doesn't work?

The projects resulting from these grants could pave the way for further medical understanding and institutional recognition of PSSD. Please repost this thread to spread the news and encourage students to apply!
