During a recent visit to Freightliner (@RailFreight), I saw first-hand the enormous size and scale of the logistics sector and the vital role it plays in keeping goods moving efficiently and sustainably into and around the West Midlands. It’s a huge undertaking. Working with partners like @gen_logistics, we’re supporting young people into these kinds of jobs - so that they can play their part of these amazing projects.

The railways were originally built for cargo: horses pulling coal-laden wooden wagons. Today, as we mark the bicentenary of the modern railway, rail freight contributes £2.45 billion to the UK economy every year, removing 5.35 million lorries from our congested roads and reducing CO2 emissions. Every day, freight trains carry materials to build our homes, repair our roads, feed us, keep the nation’s lights on, as well as delivering many other benefits to households and industries. The railway is one of Britain’s most transformative exports. Across the world long freight trains snake through vast landscapes, connecting communities and commerce, and help to power global economies. Here, @RailFreight Group’s CEO Tim Shoveller explains the crucial, but sometimes unnoticed, role of rail freight in our lives:

This is the first freight movement of intermodal containers using a Class 93 locomotive to take place on the rail network. The #Freightliner train was around 775 meters long and carrying around 1,000t of goods with a total train weight of circa 1,700t. (2/2)

Yesterday, #Freightliner locomotive 66605 was named ‘Tribute’ in memory of late Freightliner colleagues. The locomotive was named at Freightliner’s Crewe Vehicle Maintenance Facility by Freightliner's David Penney and Matthew Workman.

We continue to celebrate our 60th anniversary in 2025 by looking back at #Freightliner history each month. This month we are going back to 2016 and showcasing a Freightliner Class 66 traveling over Yarm Viaduct, just outside Middlesbrough.

🟠 We also talked about what’s needed to drive more #freight onto #rail, and how the creation of GBR can support that through the forthcoming legislation and a policy framework that puts in place the right incentives to support modal shift.

🟠 We enjoyed showing the investment we’ve made to boost efficiency – including our Vehicle Booking System. It’s helped cut HGV turnaround times to under 25 minutes, improving reliability and reducing costs for hauliers – an example of how we’re aligning road and rail operations.

🟠 It was great to host Laura Shoaf, CBE, Chair of Shadow @GBRenquiries and colleagues from @transportgovuk and @networkrail at our #Freightliner Birmingham Terminal earlier this week.
