RANDOM IDLE THOUGHT OF THE DAY I'm seeing a lot of commentary online of the "What if Trump decides to leave NATO?" variety. It's worth pointing out that the president can't "decide the United States should leave NATO." Only Congress can do that. I am continually amazed by what people think the president can just "do." What POTUS *can* do is withhold funding, and refuse to militarily serve NATO's whims, as they have a longstanding history of refusing to help us.

Have just completed the end of my first novel - I'm writing it in mosaic fashion, which means writing the scenes out of sequence, so the fact I've "completed the end" doesn't mean it's done - which is a one long 15-chapter action sequence. I sent it to one of my beta readers, a very experienced former magazine editor. His comment was, "I really enjoyed this. But this is more like an action adventure novel than a BDSM porn romance novel. Now, it's a really good action adventure novel, and maybe I misunderstand the requirements of the genre but... in a BDSM porn romance novel, shouldn't there be more fucking?" 🤣🤣🤣

In the Texas 23rd Congressional District primaries just concluded, Brandon Herrera got 23,614 votes (43.4%), Tony Gonzales got 22,675 votes (41.7%), with the remaining 14.9% split between two other Republican candidates. The way Texas voting laws work, since neither Herrera nor Gonzales got 50%, this forces a runoff on May 26th to decide who will be the Republican nominee. Since TX-23 leans heavily Republican, whoever gets the Republican nomination will win the election, guaranteed. Polymarket currently has Brandon Herrera at 78-80% probability of winning the runoff, Gonzales (obviously) at 20-22%. Last election, Tony Gonzales outspent Brandon Herrera by an 8-to-1 margin, and still only squeaked out a 400-ish vote win. That was (1) without the current scandal dragging him down, (2) when Brandon Herrera was almost an unknown quantity to most voters - his near-win last time has raised his profile considerably. Staring into my crystal ball here, I'm going to predict Brandon Herrera wins the runoff by a margin somewhere in the high single/low double digits, I'm going to say between 8-12%. 5-10% is a safe bet, over 15% is possible. But I'm going to go 8-12%. We'll see how close I was in 2-1/2 months.

Jensen Huang on Critical Thinking and How He Uses AI: "But I have to admit, I'm using AI literally every single day. I think my cognitive skills are actually advancing. The reason for that is because I'm not asking it to think for me. I'm asking it to teach me things that I don't know or help me solve problems that I otherwise wouldn't be able to solve reasonably. That's important to say, don't use it as a crutch for things you can do. Use it for things you can't do. I'm not exactly sure what people are using it for that would cause you to not have to think. For example, the idea of prompting an AI, the idea of asking questions. For example, you're spending most of your time today asking me questions. In order to ask good questions, it's a highly cognitive skill. And as a CEO, I spend most of my time asking questions. And 90% of my instructions are actually conflated with questions. It is veiled within questions. When I'm interacting with AI, it's a questioning system. You're asking questions. I think that in order to formulate good questions, you have to be thinking, you have to be analytical, you have to be reasoning yourself. In order to, when you receive an answer from an AI, I wouldn't just receive it. Usually what I do is I say, are you sure this is the best answer you can provide? I take the answer from one AI, I give it to the other AI, I ask them to critique itself. This is no different than getting three opinions, three doctors' opinions. I do the same thing. I ask the same question of multiple AIs, and I ask them to compare each other's notes and then give me the best of all the answers. I think that process of critiquing, criticizing the answers of your critical thinking enhances cognitive skills. All the people who were taking those tests, I would advise that they apply critical thinking."
