If you live anywhere near our Leawood campus, join us for worship at 11 am CT (or any of our other campuses or online or TV on KMCI - or also at 5 pm at Leawood). The sermon is focused on the last hours of Jesus’ life as recorded by Matthew, Kevin Bogan and the choir and orchestra share “Man of Sorrows” - such a powerful anthem, and the service ends powerfully and dramatically - the cross is erected, the Christ candle we lit on Christmas Eve is extinguished, and at Leawood, the stone is rolled in front of the tomb and the stained glass window turns to black. We leave in silence. Join us at 11 or tonight at 5.

This weekend in worship, we will focus on the final 24 hours of Jesus' life, starting with Judas' betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, continuing to his trials, Peter's denial, the shouts of the crowd, the conviction by Pilate, the mocking of the soldiers and the crucifixion of the King. We end the service in silence - it is a very moving service as we come to the last Sunday of Lent and prepare for Easter.

Thank you to all who joined me in Wichita today for a listening session. What a great crowd and meaningful conversation about the needs of Kansans. It was great to see some early Resurrection members and several clergy friends. I so enjoyed being with you today! Working on my Passion Sunday sermon on the way there and back thanks to my friend Greg Musil driving me to Wichita! Love driving through the Flint Hills!

Looks like it could snow a bit around 4. Regardless of the weather, we’ll have service at 5 tonight at Leawood. If you are comfortable driving in the snow, and haven’t made it to church yet today, I hope to see you tonight!

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward tonight. Tomorrow, Pastor Scott takes us to Tuesday of the Final Week of Jesus’s life when Jesus spoke words that day that sealed his fate. Don’miss this weekend I worship. I had a great week in Dallas with pastors of large United Methodist churches and also 80 young clergy in our mentoring program - the two groups met together for part of the week (pictured below).

This weekend in my message we turn to Jesus' words in Matthew 24 and 25 about the end of the age, his second coming and the final judgment. These passages have left Christians perplexed for two thousand years, and led to all kinds of speculation about the end of the world. Join us as we hear his words and ask the question he was pressing: Are you ready for the day when he returns?

A bomb threat at KCI led to diverted flights, an evacuation of the airport - our plane sat on the tarmac away from the terminals for 2:30. The airport opened back up about 90 minutes ago and we deplaned but have been waiting at the parking garage while it is still being swept.

Don't miss worship this weekend! We're focused on what Jesus said and did on Monday of the Final Week of his life. Cursing a fig tree? Answering questions aimed to trip him up. We'll be focused on Matthew 21:18-22 and 22:15-40.

Today I shared in my e-note that LaVon and I are considering my running for the US Senate as an Independent from the State of Kansas. Here's what I posted. The website includes a video in which I describe why we are considering this and also a page with FAQ's from the church and a letter from our Staff Parish Relations Committee. Here's the text from my e-note: Over the years, I’ve had numerous people suggest I run for office. I’ve been told that my experience leading this congregation, my passion for building bridges instead of walls, for seeking to “close the gap” between the world as it is and the world as it should be, and an emphasis on essential human values found in the gospels - loving our neighbor, and our enemy, and treating others the way we want to be treated - is needed in national politics today. From time to time, LaVon and I would talk about the possibility of running for office, but I’ve always felt my vocational calling was to be your pastor, something I’ve been honored to do for the last 36 years. Yet over the last year, as I’ve seen the polarization in our country reach new heights, with kindness, compassion and common decency often lost in national politics, as well as government policies that seem to widen rather than close the gap, I’ve often found myself thinking “we have to do better.” Once again, over the last 12 months, people would say, “Have you considered running for the US Senate?” LaVon and I talked, and she felt the answer was still no. About six weeks ago, I got home from work, and LaVon said, “I think we should at least consider that you have something to offer, and that perhaps this is God’s will for you.” I had been feeling that, but I never expected her to say this. So we began praying about my running as an Independent candidate for the Senate from the State of Kansas. We spoke to people who have run, and people who work in politics and have served in the Senate. We spoke with our children, our executive staff team here at Resurrection, our bishop, several United Methodist bishops, our Staff Parish Committee, and clergy friends. We have received a great deal of encouragement to move forward. Last week LaVon and I decided to take the next step, to do what is called, “testing the waters” – for me that includes fasting and praying, it includes taking five days over the next four weeks to drive across Kansas to listen and hear the concerns hopes of other Kansans, and to do the work of evaluating if there would be support for someone like me running for the US Senate. I am not a candidate, nor am I announcing a candidacy. But only strongly considering this. Our plan is to make a decision ten days after Easter. I recorded a video last night that goes into a bit more detail about why we are considering this, what would happen if we decide to run, and what role I would play here at Resurretion if I were actually to win. I’d love you to watch the video to the end – I think you’ll find it helpful. I will share this news at the end of this weekend’s sermon. After that, you won’t hear anything else about it in worship until after Easter. You won't read any more about it in my eNote after today until we announce whether we’re moving forward. My social media accounts are my own, not the church’s, and I will post on them from time to time, including information about my listening stops and an exploratory website where people can find more information. I want to say here what I say in the video: There are three loves in my life. The first is my love for God. The second is my love for my family. And third is my love for you, Resurrection. I have devoted the last 36 years to starting, growing and leading this congregation. I am so proud of you. I see this as a possible way of extending our work of bringing people together and “closing the gap.” Thank you for praying for me. You’ll find on the website here (cor.org/seniorpastor), along with the video, a set of FAQ’s, a letter prepared by our Staff Parish Committee, and a link to a feedback form.

Today at Resurrection we begin Lent and our seven-week study of the Final Week of Jesus' life. All the gospels are focused on this week. We'll take one day of that week for each Sunday of Lent. Today we begin, rather than end, Lent with Palm Sunday. Our kids are carrying in the palm branches as we sing the Hosannas inviting Christ to "save us now", to lead us to think of ourselves less, and to cleanse the temple that is our heart and life. Join us at 11 or 5 p.m., online or TV. [For those worshiping at our locations, online, or tv, it was Emmett Smith who consoled Thurmon Thomas - not Emmett Thomas which I mistakenly said in the sermon when recorded for TV, locations and online.]

This weekend at Resurrection, Palm Sunday??? Yes, Palm Sunday! We are devoting the forty days of Lent to walking with Jesus on the Final Week of his life. That Final Week began with Palm Sunday. Our children will process with the palms as we sing Hosanna. We'll devote the entire service to exploring the significance of Jesus entry into Jerusalem, the donkey, the palms, the cloaks laid on the road, the cleansing of the temple. And we'll see how all of this speaks to us today. Join us!

Tonight in the Resurrection Leawood sanctuary, we are hosting a special event with the American Public Square entitled, I Love You, But I Hate Your Politics. I'll be interviewing therapist Dr. Jeanne Safer and her husband, Richard Brookhiser. They themselves are in different political places. Jeanne interviewed 50 couples, or in some cases, adult children and parents, who were political combatants - people whose relationships were being compromised by their differences in politics. If you've struggled in your relationships over politics, join us! The event is free and begins at 6 p.m.

Today is Ash Wednesday. On this day Christians begin the 40-day season of Lent - a season of fasting, penitence, spiritual reflection and growth as we walk with Jesus towards his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter. We have a service at noon at Leawood and online, and at 7 p.m. at all of our locations. We also have a children and family service at 6:15 at Leawood, West, Downtown and Brookside. These are moving services that end with our writing our confessions, having ashes imposed on our foreheads and then leaving and burning our prayers of confession at the doors. Don't miss Ash Wednesday services.
