In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends — Martin Luther King Jr. Opinions mine.

They’re trying to chill speech against their evil—using immigration, visa restrictions, demotions, and job loss to scare people into silence. But when this clown show ends, consigned to the garbage of history, we’ll be here to mock their insecurities.

From Alice Weidel of AfD in the last German election, to Pierre Pollievre in the last Canadian election, to Orban in the recently concluded Hungarian election, the result were all disastrous. How many failed international political endorsements does it take before someone realizes the world isn’t buying what they’re selling?

For you all who think the US naval blockade will be successful just bc we have US Navy ships in the gulf … Ask yourself this. Are we going to sink Chinese, Indian and Pakistani merchant ships defying the blockade or just write their names down and cry? This will be unenforceable and speed up the collapse of the global economy. This is Madness disguised as a policy.

Regarding the nonsense below: Erdoğan is in fact the most pro-Kurdish Turkish president who made peace with Kurdish militants. Hence he wins millions of Kurdish votes. Because Turkey’s Kurds, unlike Palestinians under Israeli occupation, are equal citizens with a right to vote.
Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו@netanyahu

Israel under my leadership will continue to fight Iran’s terror regime and its proxies, unlike Erdogan who accommodates them and massacred his own Kurdish citizens.

Péter Magyar victory speech: "We want to make a country where no one is persecuted because they think differently or because someone loves in a different way to others." He didn't campaign as a liberal. But this is a huge change of direction from Orbán’s anti-LGBTQ+ crusade.

The US foreign policy establishment supports Trump collapsing the global economy. Strategic defeat has made the US ruling classes insane. They'll drag us down with them rather than have their beloved Empire take the L. x.com/RichardHaass/s…

Good to see Pres Trump has announced US will mount a blockade of Strait of Hormuz unless Iran opens it to all. We should also propose a new governance authority for the Strait in which Iran participates but doesn't control. open.substack.com/pub/richardhaa…

💥🇭🇺With 95% of votes counted, Hungary’s map shows the opposition Tisza party crushing Fidesz 94–12 in constituencies. Péter Magyar has secured a 2/3 majority, asked President Tamás Sulyok and other Orbán loyalists to resign immediately, and announced his first visit to Warsaw.

JD Vance is so unpopular, so universally reviled by people everywhere, that his visit to Hungary was like the political kiss of death for Viktor Orban, sealing the outgoing prime minister’s fate, probably actually encouraging more people to vote *against* Orban because Vance is so unlikable. It’s incredible. And it happened at the same time that Vance failed on the Iran talks. It’s like his deal with the devil to be Trump’s vice president is coming due already, and all that he has to look forward to now is just continued and deserved humiliation.

I am appalled and saddened by the killing of the Lebanese Red Cross @RedCrossLebanon paramedic Hassan Badawi and the injury of another colleague while on a humanitarian mission in Bint Jbeil in the Nabatiye Governorate in Southern Lebanon on 12 April. The @IFRC extends its deepest condolences to Hassan’s family and wish full recovery to the injured. The ambulances and their crews were clearly marked with the Red Cross emblem on all visible sides. I strongly condemn this attack. Humanitarian workers are not a target. The IFRC reiterates its call that ambulance personnel, medical staff, and Lebanese Red Cross staff and volunteers must be respected and protected at all times. Hassan is the second Lebanese Red Cross volunteer killed in the line of duty since 2 March. This must stop.

The irony: what gave Viktor Orbán landslide power is now what crushed him—the very district-based electoral system he designed. In this kind of system, the country is divided into districts, and whoever wins each district takes the seat. That lets a party with a strong, efficient geographic base turn a modest majority into a huge parliamentary edge. That’s how ~54% of the vote once became ~70% of seats—enough for constitutional change. In Israel, a similar system might’ve given Likud something like 70 seats. But when it flipped, ~40% left him with barely a quarter of parliament. As Israel Katz once said: electoral reforms tend to backfire on their authors. District systems amplify wins—but also losses. When it works, you dominate. When it doesn’t, you’re wiped out. I wrote a book about it a few years ago. You're welcome to read it if you have trouble falling asleep.

I too feel we're most likely past the threshold of irreparability. Under the most perfect of circumstances a partial recovery might be possible but we'll never get back to where we were or the trajectory that had been charted out from the Founding. Trump is filth, the people around him are garbage, but their ascendancy speaks to a much more profound societal ignorance, behavioral pathology, failure to discern as responsible adults, immorality, and a complete lack of civic virtue on the part of far too many among the electorate. This isn't open for debate. It's self-evident. The world beyond our shores can see it with clarity. Too many Americans cannot.
HawaiiDelilah™ 🥥🌴🌊@HawaiiDelilah

As an international relations writer, let me say that the damage is irreparable. This is the result of the 2024 US electorate-facile, foolish, impudent, impulsive, lacking perspicacity. It is not just Trump; it is the country & culture that produced him. The world cannot trust us

Two decades ago, I was disappointed in the American Catholic Church saying nothing about the immoral Iraq war. But things have changed. We now have the cardinal archbishop of Washington DC denouncing the immoral Iran war.
