@psframes I’m guessing it was also treated, at least revarnished? The old picture has some noticeable yellowing in the painting that isn’t there on the picture with the new frame, and which cannot be explained by the reframing…

We framed Pieter de Hooch‘s Courtyard Scene today. The clumsy gilded 20th century replica frame was replaced with a newly acquired Dutch 17th century ebonised fruitwood ripple moulding frame. This is 400th re-framing of the permanent collection (NG) during my tenure.

It’s sad for me to see this wonderful encaustic portrait being used as a ping-pong ball to enrich people, as opposed to being in a museum. It slipped into obscurity, part of a private collection, and a modern varnish has yellowed. It needs care (quick digital facelift below).

Fayum 'Portrait L', also called 'Portrait of a woman with pearl earrings and emerald necklace', c.100 AD, one of the first Roman Egyptian mummy portraits discovered by archaeologist Flinders Petrie on 14th February 1888. Exhibited in galleries across Europe and the United States, 'Portrait L' enchanted generations of artists and writers, including the Dutch painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and it is also rumoured, Oscar Wilde, who soon after viewing it wrote his novel 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', about a man whose beauty and soul becomes linked to a painting. The portrait was exhibited this week at Frieze Masters, London, and is currently offered for sale by ArtAncient gallery.

One of the greatest hands in art history, methinks. From Hugo van der Goes's Monforte Altarpiece, 1470, oddly decapitated at some point. Was once a triptych with raised center. Looks like the missing part showed angels floating down with the baby's diaper, but we'll never know.

@RousBenjamin Without knowing the mineral or organic source of the blue pigment, I couldn’t say. It’s likely to have been Egyptian Blue, given that hue, and that typically doesn’t change color as it ages. I suspect it was always blue - sometimes these ‘adjacent’ colors were used.

Gefeliciteerd Henk. De populaire media -De Telegraaf voorop- hebben deze gebeurtenis opgepompt tot iets nieuwswaardigs. Kunnen we het hebben over de formatie, de Russische dreiging, de aanstaande handelsoorlog met China en de beroerde staat van ons onderwijs.
