So apparently there’s a lot of knowledge I can use from being Canadian and setting my story in Alberta Canada that is gonna make me seem legit. For example, the drinking age here is 18, my FMC is 19 and is surprised that she can drink at the bar (my FMC is American)

So, in writing news. I found a stock photo some time ago of a guy that looks exactly like my MMC from Entwined Vulpine Moon. Hahaha. It’s a Turkish model. 👀

@elron6900 Yes!! That’s an excellent point. Thank you! I might need to tweak the plot. The car is the excuse for dad to come visit her at campus. But maybe he just buys her a new car here he saw on Kijiji 😁 because bringing that old car was a hassle.

@RubyMTemple California would be roughly the same as Florida for this respect. The tires, the engine/battery, the central heating ... All of those would likely be serious problems in an AB winter with an unmodified car from Cali IMO ...

@elron6900 Thank you for that insight! Yeah, my character is from California (born in Canada but moved to the US as a toddler) and comes in a flight to a university up here and the dad is supposed to bring her car here during early April. Haha. I might need some changes then. 😊

@RubyMTemple OTOH, a character from Florida who drives to Canada in, say, September, for a vacation of a couple of months, might get some interesting plot elements out of the challenges of driving in AB after we get a September blizzard lol ...

@KT_Carlisle I would also want to know how they determined it was AI. I know the author has now blamed the editor for running the MS in some AI software when she self-published. So, is this going to be pointing fingers and lawsuits?

Things I still want to know re: The "Shy Girl" Scandal 👇🏻 1. How did an AI-written manuscript escape the scrutiny of an agent, editor, and Big 5 publisher? 2. What methods were used to definitively determine the book was written using AI? (And I don't want to hear, "It's obvious!" I've worked with plenty of authors whose work I was suspicious of having been written using AI, but I'd still never go so far as to flat-out accuse them of having done so without actual proof, usually in the form of a baked-in prompt—which, yes, has happened before. So, I'd really like to know how Hachette actually determined this to be AI-generated beyond public outcry. Because if all it takes is a few witch hunters to yell, "AI SLOP!" then I'm sorry, but that's equally problematic.) 3. Did the publisher think the public was too stupid to notice, or is trad pub really *that* overworked/understaffed that they were unable to catch something so obvious, even after multiple rounds of edits?
Maureen Langloss@MaureenLangloss

I’m happy to see a publisher pull an AI-generated book. I hope it has a chilling effect on people trying to sell AI slop. If you can’t be bothered to write it, we can’t be bothered to read it. Gift link: nytimes.com/2026/03/19/boo…

@AbsenceOfGravit Yeah, here in Calgary we call it washrooms. So I’m glad I’m setting my story in Alberta so at least I have that accurate. Write what you know is what I tell myself. 😊

@elron6900 Actually, for writing purposes. What makes more sense? Bringing a car across the US border and registering it here or sell it in the US and buy a new one here? I have bought all my cars here in Calgary directly.

@RubyMTemple If you need a reference, I am a 59yo born & bred Albertan. I grew up around Calgary and Southern AB, live in SE AB now. I can probably give you context for the region going back to the 70s

@Wisteraverse Oh boy, yeah. My FMC is gonna drink at that bar at 19. In fact i have a line saying she’s surprised because in the US the drinking age is 21 (to remind the reader this is not the US, is an exotic place called… Canada 🇨🇦 🦫 🫎 🍻 ) lmao

An American beta-reader criticized my 18-year-old character drinking beer because they assumed it should not be allowed, despite it being high fantasy set in a fictional & historical world. Also drinking age (beer, wine) in Germany is 16. Not every place is the US!🤦‍♀️

In writing related news, things are going steady. I don't have a fancy graphic but here are my accomplishments lately for Draft 4: - Finished changed third-person to first-person. - Up to chapter 7 edited. - Removed several scenes, yet the number of words increased. 🤣
