An Open Letter to the X Product Team Hello @nikitabier I’m writing this not just as a user, but as someone who understands how powerful communication can be when it is done right and how damaging it can be when it is misunderstood. There is something important happening on X right now that needs your attention. The automatic translation system, especially for Hausa, is not working the way it should. Instead of recognizing Hausa as what it is, one of the most widely spoken languages in West Africa with over 100 million speakers, the system often misclassifies it as Indonesian. That alone already shows a gap that needs to be fixed. But it goes deeper than that. The translations themselves are often inaccurate. Not just slightly off, but completely misrepresenting the original meaning. And on a platform like X, where words carry weight and can reach thousands or even millions of people instantly, this is not a small issue. A wrong translation is not just a mistake. It can put people at risk. There are cases where the AI translates a harmless Hausa statement into something that appears offensive, misleading, or even against platform rules. This creates a dangerous situation where users can be misunderstood, reported, or penalized for something they never actually said. That is not just a technical problem. It is a trust problem. People rely on X to express themselves. If the system changes their words into something else entirely, then the platform is no longer just hosting conversations, it is unintentionally rewriting them. Hausa is not a niche language. It is a major language with deep cultural context, nuance, and structure. Treating it as something else, or translating it without proper accuracy, dismisses an entire community and exposes them to unnecessary risk. What I am asking for is simple, but important: Take Hausa translation seriously. Improve language detection so it correctly identifies Hausa. Invest in better models or human-reviewed systems that understand the context behind the words. And most importantly, ensure that users are not punished because of translation errors they did not create. This is not just about Hausa. It is about fairness, accuracy, and respecting the voices of people on your platform. X is global. The tools supporting it should reflect that. I believe this can be fixed.
