It’s been well known forever that when you lose weight about a third of the weight loss is from muscle and 2/3 from fat. A goal of any weight loss program is to minimize muscle mass that is lost by encouraging protein intake and exercise. Think about it – When you have a lot of fat, you need more muscle to carry that fat. It’s like lifting weights. When you no longer need to push all that fat around the muscle recedes. This is not new – it’s been known forever. The exact same phenomenon occurs with bariatric surgery or any other weight loss intervention.
