Now that ICML papers are submitted and we are in the midst of discussions on whether scaling is enough or new architectural/algorithmic ideas are needed, what can be a better time to submit your best work to our workshop on New Frontiers in Associative Memory @iclr_conf? Associative memory is a prominent emerging paradigm in the landscape of mainstream AI and I expect exciting developments in this area in the next few years. 1/ Excited to share new work with @MarschallOwen, @AlexVanMeegen, and Ashok Litwin-Kumar! "Connectivity Structure and Dynamics of Nonlinear Recurrent Neural Networks" analyzes how global, spectral structure of connectivity in real-world networks affects collective dynamics.

@SussilloDavid Similarity of solutions is hard to quantify, particularly when comparing across different network architectures. But the hypothesis is probably correct; at least, it agrees with the prevalent intuition. Also, the name proposed by @SussilloDavid is quite charming!

Is there a name for the hypothesis that task-trained neural networks and biological brains develop similar representations when they perform well, despite differences in architecture and learning methods? I.e. that optimization (whether backprop or evolution) leads to a similar solution? If not, I think we should call it The Tolstoy Hypothesis: "All well-functioning networks are alike; each poorly functioning network is poor in its own way." 🤓💅

The tradition to publish proceedings imortalised this story. In particular, the 2022 school organised by @KrzakalaF and @zdeborova was recorded: leshouches2022.github.io (including 2 speakers from the 1985 school, @SaraASolla & @ylecun!!!)

@kapahi_pankaj I assume the prospective postdoc did not tell you the proposal was AI generated. If that is the case, I would definitely not hire them. I would clearly explain the reason: intellectual dishonesty, trying to pass as theirs a text that was not.

I asked a prospective postdoc to send me a one page proposal of what they plan to do in the lab. I sent them some topics to think around. I got an AI generated proposal and it was bad …. Should I not entertain the postdoc anymore or give another chance?
