Politics/history. Support Ukraine. Former liberal Tory until 2017. Now a Labour member. Appalled by plastic patriots supporting Reform.

One of the worst prime ministers in British history. Promised change but delivered yet more managed decline. Promised competence but ran our economy into the ground. Promised higher standards in public life but presided over a string of scandals that began with himself pilfering the pockets of Lord Alli. Promised to work for the national interest while trying to sell off our national territory, refusing to invest in our national defence, alienating our closest allies, and incentivising our enemies. Promised to be “on the side of British workers” while throwing them under the bus through the India trade deal, mass immigration, tax hikes for farmers, & making it far more expensive to actually hire British workers in this country. Promised to deliver “fairness” while imposing an extreme policy of broken borders while forcing the British people to pay billions for it, allowing private firms like Serco to outbid the British people and favour illegal migrants in our own housing market, mainstreaming two-tier injustice, and shrugging his shoulders as every 1 young Brit who gets a job is undercut by 27 young foreigners getting a job in our own labour market. Promised to be “tolerant” while being uniquely intolerant of people who merely hold different beliefs, clamping down on free speech at every opportunity, throwing people into jail for what they write on social media, and curbing our ability to debate Islam. Promised to “work for the British people” while never grasping why the people wanted a national inquiry into the mass r*pe and sexual abuse of hundreds of thousands of their own children — and calling them “far right” for wanting truth and justice. And all done with the tone of a sanctimonious, pompous head teacher, scolding the British people for problems his own party helped create, then made worse, and then called “progress”. Good-bye Keir Starmer. And good riddance!! Full piece below.

Keir, thank you for all our cooperation, your support, and the joint decisions that have helped make our Europe and our protection of life stronger. The United Kingdom has been, is, and will remain among the world’s leaders. Here in Ukraine, we deeply value Britain, and every meeting and every conversation we have had has always been filled with real substance. Thank you for always being in touch, always engaged, and always striving to do what is needed and what will truly help. I wish the United Kingdom and all British people every success as well as realisation of your national goals. We have confidence in Britain. Keir, you are always a welcome guest in Ukraine. @Keir_Starmer

There's certain deep irony that at a time when the UK so desperately wants and needs to find its place in the world 10 years on from Brexit, it gets rid of the very PM who patiently rebuilt many of these key partnerships with allies, including with the EU.
Ursula von der Leyen@vonderleyen

It can take many leaders years to grow into the statesman you became in just two years. European and Ukrainian security is stronger because of you. Thank you, dear Keir.

I consider @Keir_Starmer a friend and I'm thinking of him on what must be a very tough day. Serving in public life is a tremendous privilege but politics can also be a harsh business. When the time comes for Keir to leave Downing Street, he can be proud of the contribution he has made to the country he loves and to the Labour Party that he led back to Government in 2024. I'm grateful for the opportunities we had to work together to strengthen our AUKUS defence and security partnership, support the brave people of Ukraine and keep children safe from the damage that social media can do. I wish Keir, Victoria and their children well with everything the future holds.

Keir Starmer squandered much of the hope people placed in us at the General Election that Labour would deliver real change - and opened the door to a Reform government. We now need to deliver real Labour values with policies that show we are on the side of ordinary people.

You just thanked him for a job well done, as if you're already PM and as if he's just done a job for you. You fucked him over and then thanked him! It's thanks to Keir that you're even in the position to stab him in the back - without his 2024 win, Labour would never have a majority for you to inherit. Absolutely shameless behaviour. How are we to scrutinise your plans? Indeed, what are your plans? The concocted plot for Streeting to wield the knife, then conveniently drop out to ensure a coronation, completely stinks of an undemocratic stitch-up. We're not fools, we see what's gone on. If you believe you have a genuine mandate, call a General Election. Otherwise, it is an insult to our democracy that someone who hasn't been an MP for a decade can waltz into Number 10 via a safe seat engineered for this exact purpose.

Keir has given huge service to our country and I want to thank him for his leadership and dedication during such a challenging period. His decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way. I will put myself forward as part of this process. The country expects stability, seriousness and a continued focus on the issues that matter most and that is what it will get. As we move forward, our priority must be to work together to get the country back to where we all want it to be. People want to see progress on economic growth, cost of living, public services, housing and opportunities for the next generation. Political change should never distract from the responsibility to improve people's lives. The Labour movement has always been at its strongest when it looks forward with confidence and purpose. This is what we will do from here and we will make sure this transition is a positive process of renewal for our party and our country.

Keir Starmer’s place in history is assured. We owe Keir a debt of gratitude for taking Labour from its worst electoral defeat in 2019, bringing Labour back into government with a huge majority in 2024 and then guiding Britain through difficult times nationally and globally.

I was proud to stand on Downing Street with the Prime Minister this morning. And I’m proud of the Britain that this Labour government is working to deliver - a country where power, wealth and opportunity is shared amongst the many and not the few. Keir Starmer brought our Labour Party back from the brink into government after 14 years in opposition. He did so because the public trusted us on the economy and on national security, and because they voted for our manifesto. My party mustn’t forget the lessons of our successive defeats, and must remember why and how we won only two years ago. Whatever happens next, we can be grateful for Keir Starmer’s leadership and the work his government has done to put Britain back on a path to a brighter future. We wish Keir and his family all the best for what comes next, and remain forever grateful for what he has done for my party and for our country.

Starmer was hated. Says far more about the electorate than the man. Impossible to govern when people want welfare, triple lock, tax loopholes, NIMBYist vetoes, while also hating the low growth, high debt economy this entails. Starmer was a good man leading an ungovernable country

Well, there we have it. Keir Starmer has announced his resignation and has set out the process by which a new leader will be chosen. For the time being, I suspect he will remain in post until that process has concluded, as is normally the case. Now, however, the real backlash begins. Those who supported the mandate secured in the 2024 General Election must now start organising, building support and demonstrating that there is an alternative path forward. Darren Jones appears, to many, to be the most credible alternative to Andy Burnham. He comes with a much cleaner record, no significant scandals, no major failures attached to his name, and has consistently been regarded as articulate, balanced and capable. Most importantly, he has shown that he can take on Reform and any other political opponent in a serious and effective manner. That will be the key question in the weeks ahead, should he decide to stand. My advice to Labour members would be not to tear up your membership cards just yet. You will have an opportunity to make your voices heard. However, if you oppose Andy Burnham's candidacy, you should make that clear to your MPs and to those involved in the process. The Labour Party needs a genuine contest, one capable of producing a leader with a clear mandate from the membership. Darren Jones could credibly argue that he is continuing the mandate secured by Keir Starmer, having been part of the team that worked to deliver it. Andy Burnham, by contrast, was not part of that project and therefore has much more to prove. There may well be other candidates who choose to put themselves forward, and they should be heard. At this stage, however, Darren Jones appears to be one of the strongest contenders and one of the least burdened by political baggage. If Andy Burnham were to win the leadership, I believe the pressure for a General Election within six to eight months would become overwhelming, and Labour would face a very real risk of electoral collapse under his leadership.

Russia is still bombing Ukraine and Ireland is still helping them with raw materials. It’s a scandal that’s still received almost no major international coverage. So a huge thanks to @Telegraph for having me on to talk about the scandal at the Aughinish refinery 🫡
