Back in the day voice actors had the freedom to play things outside of their identity (i.e. black playing Asian, men playing women, women playing cats, etc.) because what mattered was the actor's performance not retarded identity politics.

@HiawathaAvenged @SeeksOut_ That was a fun cartoon. I remember Michelangelo's weapon curiously changing from nunchucks to a grappling hook one season and finding out years later it was because nunchucks had been made illegal (even on television?!) in the UK and they wanted to air it there.

@SeeksOut_ James Avery wasn't the only one voicing Shredder at the time he took off some episodes and someone else voice him and then he officially left the series and some other voice actor took over the 1987 series lasted 9 or 10 years he didn't voice him every episode.
