Call for papers: The North American World Cup in 2026 Soccer and Society Special Issue Editors: Tamir Bar-On (Rabdan Academy, United Arab Emirates) Danyel Reiche (Georgetown University in Qatar, GU-Q) The 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup is just a few years away! This special issue will feature original articles about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is the first ever joint North American World Cup hosted by the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada. The 2026 World Cup will present a unique set of challenges as it is also the first World Cup coordinated between three sovereign states and the first World Cup consisting of 48 participating national teams. Authors will examine the cultural, economic, historical, political, social, and security dimensions of the World Cup. Each piece must include a section in which authors reflect about the impact of their topic on the 2026 World Cup. Authors can use a variety of conceptual and theoretical lenses and delve into in any of these topics: 1) Soccer as a geopolitical phenomenon 2) Soccer and international relations theories 3) Soccer and its links to various identities from nationalism and hooliganism to left-wing and gender-based identities 4) Soccer discourses and narratives 5) Soccer and its ties to issues of leadership and governance (including FIFA) 6) Soccer, security, peace and conflict resolution 7) Soccer and organized crime 8) Soccer and human rights 9) Soccer and diplomacy 10) Soccer and the environment 11) Soccer, sexism, and women’s rights 12) Soccer, organized labor and worker rights 13) Soccer, racism, anti-racism, and multiculturalism 14) Soccer histories, biographies, and cultural and artistic expressions 15) Soccer and its role in North American societies 16) Soccer histories in the US, Mexico, or Canada 17) Soccer, World Cups, and hosting issues 18) Soccer, World Cups, marketing and economics 19) Soccer and the World Cup broadcasting rights 20) Soccer and World Cups in a comparative perspective 21) Soccer as a sociological, anthropological, philosophical or religious phenomena 22) Soccer and neglected areas of academic research Deadlines: A 250-word abstract and a bibliography with a minimum of 5 sources due on March 31, 2024 to be submitted to tbaron@ra.ac.ae and dtr38@georgetown.edu. Notifications will be sent out by April 12, 2024. Accepted abstracts will need to complete their articles by January 31, 2025. The special issue will be published in 2025. Please follow the style format of Soccer and Society. Articles should be 8,000 words inclusive of Notes and References. @FB_Collective @PSAsportpol
