@Stephanie2jones This is such sad news 😔 He taught me, @SimonFrenchBook and @AilsaMcW at @UWEBristol back in the 90s and his lectures were always entertaining. It made me smile when I came to Aber and saw him around, even though he’d have had no clue who I was.

@SimonFrenchBook The Owl Service is wonderful (one of his books published originally for children - but all his "children's" books work for children and adults alike). The Stone Book Quartet is a sparse but very evocative collection of four linked novellas. Red Shift is strange and enticing.

Alan Garner finally squeezing onto the Booker longlist, aged 87 (longlist, mind; let's not get too excited just yet) tells you much about how literary prizes work and very little about about how good a writer Alan Garner is.

@DigitalTolkien I bought a copy of this forty-odd years ago with money from my paper round. It was the first Tolkien book I bought with my own money. I’ve still got it too (the book, not the paper round!)

This was the book (with this specific cover) that changed everything for me.
