Proud to say 3 undergrad interns are coauthors on our review 👏 I had great mentors in my undergrad lab and have an awesome PhD advisor that set examples of effective mentoring. So happy to see their contributions in our paper 🥹

We published a review of squamate genomics, something that evolved out of @SimoneGable’s comps. Hard to stay up to date in a fast evolving field, but I think it’s a nice overview of where we’re at in such a key group of organisms! So much more to come! mdpi.com/2073-4425/14/7…

@phytools_liam is there any support for phylogenetic network formats in phytools? (or plans to add..?)

Excellent talk by my friend Taylor Hains from the University of Chicago. Do you think working with whole genomes in birds is easy? Well, think again... Assembling microchromosomes in birds is challenging but, at the same time, fascinating ! #PAG32

I am horrified by @FedEx's commercial portraying a driver who killed a rattlesnake while delivering a package as a hero. I have written a letter to FedEx marketing officials and hope that you will do so as well, and will share this post to get more people involved. 1/4

Great seminar by @lpachter today @ASU on the use of UMAP plots in genomics (and why we probably shouldn’t) 🧬

I am starting a new video series called WAY COOL GENOMICS! Join me as I showcase examples where genomics is used in a study that is important, impactful, – and just plain WAY COOL!

Earth BioGenome Project 🌍
We now have a representative genome for about half of all Squamate families. Genome size ranges between 1-2.5 Gb across 200 million years of evolution.

Pleased to share the results of a massive years-long effort to catalogue how non-human, non-model animals deal with cancer. Zach Compton @arizonaevo cut his teeth with this project, and fared better than well I'd say! aacr.org/about-the-aacr…

I just uploaded another project dataset (an RNAseq study) to SRA, BioSample, and BioProject - and along the way created step by step slide deck with screenshots of the process (web page captures and metadata tables, etc). Let me know if you're interested and I'll be happy to share it . I remember early in my career uploading to NCBI correctly was a dark art (most people skip steps or don't bother with all the metadata, used off brand annotations, or just read "optional" as "skip it" - which sadly often makes data reuse a massive hurdle later on), so.... I'm training my team later this week on how to do it "right" (at least IMHO the right way). The deck is ~47 slides... so... maybe it will be helpful to someone else too? I'm getting feedback from the team on the deck later this week. once I've updated it - I'll share it if anyone is interested. probably will throw it over onto Git or gDrive or something.
