Why dont head lice go extinct?
Normally animals become endangered or extinct due to habitat destruction. So since anyone who has lice kills them, and habitat is constantly being destroyed, why are they still around?
Where are they all coming from?
It turns out that you can have lice asymptomatically. You can have lice and not know.
Because lice evolved as human parasites, they have to live in human hair and won't survive anywhere else. So when people start itching or noticing them, that's actually a failure on the part of the parasite.
The itching is because the host immune system has responded to them. They also often get noticed when they overpopulate.
But it's actually totally possible to have a small lice population and not know. Like you could have them right now.
