Apartheid Israel should be the same. The word Israel should never be mentioned without the word Apartheid.

Prosecutor won't budge on a felony burglary charge wherein my client allegedly stole strawberry syrup from a grocery store (valued at $2.75). If they go down on it they lose their gun rights, ability to vote, and could serve real jail time. Over $2.75 worth of syrup. Insanity.

I’m not sure people fully realize the looming catastrophe of a world in which students at elite universities are struggling to read even a single book. Mass literacy quite literally built the modern world. Without it, our entire civilizational project will unravel, rapidly.

A student today at my elite university admitted to me today that she took a class so she could work on reading for more than 20 minutes at a time. She can't read. She mainly skims and summarizes, she says and still gets A's. This student is, by professional standards, illiterate. Gonna have high GPA when she graduates. This conversation was had after 6 of 22 students dropped my course because the maximum reading per week in one week was over 100 pages. What people aren't grasping is that this is literally *dangerous*. These people are going to be come doctors, engineers, etc. They are - by any metric - vastly less capable than prior generations. These effects are cumulative over a lifetime. This grade inflation is part of the problem, but not even close to the entirety. And the problem obviously starts in K-12. Students don't know history because, you can't actually become historically literate on the advice of 'never assign more than 30 pages a week'. You can't develop any of the skills that came with literacy. This is, quite honestly, a civilizational catastrophe.

The procedure would kill him. He considers this an acceptable trade for digital immortality.
This is the person making decisions about the future of artificial intelligence for hundreds of millions of users. A man who views ending his own biological life as a reasonable step toward uploading his consciousness to the cloud.

Director James Cameron on why Big Tech owning AGI is scarier than any science fiction he's ever made:
"AGI will not emerge from a government funded program. It will emerge from one of the tech giants currently funding this multi-billion dollar research."
And when that happens, he warns, you won't get a vote on it:
"So then you'll be living in a world that you didn't agree to, didn't vote for, that you are co-inhabiting with a super intelligent alien species that answers to the goals and rules of a corporation."
A corporation that already knows everything about you:
"An entity which has access to the comms, beliefs, everything you ever said, and the whereabouts of every person in the country via your personal data."
From there, the slide toward something far darker is shorter than most people think:

And even the best-case outcome isn't reassuring. Tech giants becoming the self-appointed arbiters of human good is, as he puts it, the fox guarding the hen house.
He's not buying the idea that these companies would stay benevolent with that kind of power:
"They would never ever think of using that power against us and strip mining us for our last drop of cash."
The sarcasm is the point.
Cameron has spent four decades imagining worst-case futures on screen. His verdict on this one:
"That's a scarier scenario than what I presented in the Terminator 40 years ago, if for no other reason than it's no longer science fiction."
