Nobody *wants* to recommend another newsletter to their audience. 2 ways to change their mind: 1️⃣ Give them something they *do* want to share instead (free resource, tool etc), or... 2️⃣ Make it worth their time (pay per referred subscriber, add them to your recs widget etc)

🚨 Every newsletter operator is doing cross-promotions wrong... There are 3 levels to growing a high quality newsletter audience with cross-promotions (getting free shoutouts from other newsletters): LEVEL 1️⃣: Occasionally partner up with other newsletters to give each other a shoutout LEVEL 2️⃣: Create a free resource/tool every month and give it to a bunch of relevant newsletters to share with their audience (newsletters are desperate for cool content to share) LEVEL 3️⃣: Same as level 2, but you offer to feature any newsletters who share your resource in your newsletter recommendations widget to new subscribers. That way, newsletters don't just get cool content to share with their audience... they actually get new subscribers too. Making them *much* more likely to promote you enthusiastically Most newsletters are stuck on level 1: Slow, inconsistent growth A handful make it to level 2: Consistent, mediocre growth Nobody has cracked level 3 yet: Consistent, meaningful growth Why? Because they don't know level 3 exists. But it does, and it can drive 10k+ subscribers every week for free.

Stop — don't spend even $1 on newsletter growth in 2026 until you can answer this question: What do you *really* care about more... → acquiring engaged subscribers who will read every email? → or acquiring target subscribers who will want to buy something from you? There's no wrong answer (it depends on your business model). But the brutal, honest truth is that you can't optimize for both. And ~95% of the newsletter operators I talk to are building wildly unprofitable businesses... because they're optimizing for the wrong kind of subscribers. What's your answer?

An obvious-but-ignored observation from working with 100s of 7- and 8-figure newsletters: Sending more emails makes you more money. That doesn’t mean create more content. It might just mean spreading out the same content volume across more sends. Try it and see what happens!
