I know we place hella importance on competitive FGs but comp is not even in my personal top 3 reasons to get good at FGs: 1) You like doing cool shit in game 2) They are the most fun games to discuss strats with other people 3) You want a “learning how to learn” arc

@Lapriz_ I think it’s higher than “none” for sure, but definitely lower than “high” by most of our (subjective) standards. I was more so interested in the “placements” argument here.

And I still assume a vet that's good at the game is gonna win vs a bum 'almost' every time when I watch a set. Sure, the chances aren't as solid as previous games, but it's still pretty damned high from what I observe. That's why I think the game still rewards tk fundies.
Speedkicks@Speedkicks

Logical fallacy. Being the better player with an understanding, in any game, rewards you with an advantage, not a win. In a well designed game, the % advantage you receive for being the better player is so high, that we just assume the better player wins.

Tekken 8's design philosophy is to have more forced up-close interactions and to make decisions more high commitment. It's very odd that VF players will see Tekken players complaining about this and think that VF is the thing they're looking for.
DEMETRIUS! (Cmoney) (Dee all the way G)@NanceDemetrius

Virtua Fighter has always had better movement. The real reason that Tekken players won’t dedicate themselves to vf is because vf punishes the movement that Tekken is based from. For example KBD would get punished just by a neutral mid kick for big stagger guaranteed damage.

@ahukahu Ok now you have my genuine interest. Do you see the difference between my ask for the book containing semantic definitions and your response with documentation of an abstract thought model or no?

@Speedkicks Compare: T8 players : this is how the game should work T8 Devs : no you're wrong. Me : this is what these terms mean. Speedkicks : no you're wrong.

Even though Tekken 8 is on crack right now. I still don't get why people say you don't need know to know how to play Tekken. Every Placer is still a veteran. The game Def rewards understanding Tekken.

@ahukahu If it wasn’t logically fallacious, you would not have introduced your adverbs. 😁

@Speedkicks Something a T8 dev would say 🫠 anyway use words better. People listen to what you have to say about T8. To say something is logically fallacious when it's not is bad use of your influence.

@ahukahu Actually now that you mention it, the lack of understanding my repetition really does remind me of the average T8 player 😭

@Speedkicks These aren't 'my' semantics. You asked for definition. I gave you the commonly held understanding in Philosophy defined by SEP which has consensus in philosophy world.

@ahukahu Yes, semantics matter to your philosophy. But your philosophy does not matter to my semantics, which is what I had initially imagined I’d be strengthening in this conversation.

@ahukahu If you want to discuss philosophy, I recommend not leading with semantics. I’ll discuss syntax to its reasonable end but I’m not too interested in arguing perspective.

@Speedkicks The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is largely considered one of the most reliable resources for learning Philosophy. Fallacies are part of philosophy, brother.

@Speedkicks Sure. I like SEP definition that distinguishes argument conception fallacies with belief conception fallacies. Argument conception fallacies (i.e. formal logical fallacies) are to do with form and structure. You said it was a logical fallacy. No logic rules have been violated

@Speedkicks That's not a fallacy though. That's a poor argument. Logically there's nothing fallacious here. Are we both using these terms the same? Or are you using "fallacy" to mean "bad argument"?

@Void_Sovereign @Lapriz_ I think we’re in a funny position where Tekken 8 may reward legacy skills more than some games that it rewards skill less than.

@Speedkicks @Lapriz_ Not a bad analogy at all lol. T8 probably does still reward legacy skill more than other *modern* fighting games. That’s not a high bar though. SNK games excluded. Idk about those.

@ahukahu So the fallacy is in riding the “something is being rewarded” idea out beneath that threshold.

Speedkicks@Speedkicks·
@ahukahu There is a quantitative threshold where people no longer say a skill is being rewarded, and it’s well above the threshold for seeing noobs place in tournaments.

@Speedkicks I think what @Lapriz_ means is that Tekken 8 still heavily rewards legacy skill since every placer at majors is a veteran in the series. Compared to GGST, which he also played, where most of the major winners seem to be players who are relatively new to the series.

@noback_TK Yeah , same feelings about TFT. I genuinely don’t know what’s the point of sitting down, making mathematically optimal decisions just to see if you win.

@Speedkicks you probably think the same of TFT? tbh the idea of “professional play” being “play this high variance thing enough for your advantage to shine” is disagreeable to me as a player, but as a math person it’s interesting. probably super frustrating to be a pro in those games lol

@Speedkicks MTG great competitive game, but by design the advantage a professional has vs. an amateur imo isn't very high. i think certain pros have like 60%? winrate im curious if within your logic , would you find MTG a poorly designed game?

@DonSamaAtlas I dont think thats something a person can ballpark. Theres way too many variables, it’d be mad arrogant for me to think I could answer that 😭😭 This is just an abstract example
