As a surgical resident, this is something more concerning to me! The robot will be there to learn after completing training, and open surgery reps are what I want as a trainee! Perhaps thoughtful simulation and collaboration with Pathology can help with this…

Let me ask an uncomfortable question. There are a lot of surgeons being trained who feel not comfortable performing open surgery. They won’t convert MIS to open because they just are not comfortable. HAVE WE SKIPPED THE MIS to open paradigm of training.

Interesting article, I’ve asked numerous mentors about this topic and a common response is robotic surgery is more similar to open surgery. As a resident I’m choosing to add robotic surgery to my toolkit not make it my default.
