@fredleept @oikeios I guess it depends on the place. I've been a prof since 2013 and we've never given anyone illusions even though most of the students in our tiny program got excellent to decent jobs until the last 2 years... Certainly not this year and I'm not holding my breath for the future!

@daraghjgrant @thezachloeffler But it looks like they're talking about using more "technology"... They'll probably also try to pare down less popular lang offerings by doing course exchanges w/ other unis (some are synchronous, some asyc). I think Chicago might already be experimenting w/this w/ Portuguese.

I’m now hearing that the administration is proposing reducing the division to eight departments and also toying with the idea of eliminating and outsourcing language instruction. A rumor is also going around that doctoral admissions will be cancelled for next year.

Not entirely sure what’s happening at Chicago yet, but it’s happening fast and largely in secret—I’ve heard the provost has ordered the dean to consolidate depts in the humanities div with fewer than 15 TT faculty. Could be the end of some very important depts and PhD programs

@thezachloeffler @daraghjgrant Could be what happened ages ago at some unis. At Penn St@te Spanish 1 is all online async. 2 + 3 meet 50 min 2x/wk. The rest is online async. Instructors + students hate it. As do those of us who have to teach advanced culture courses to students who can't form a simple sentence.

@BL_Balthaser @tjschweiger Also dumb because the humanities are one of the few areas that universities could support on their own without govt funding (we're cheap). There is no conceivable way they'll be able to make up for govt cuts to the sciences and other STEM fields.

@pmckelveyphd Not a problem in Central PA. Just the other night at a restaurant in State College I had a cheeseburger w/ a pierogi on top. It was the special of the day but they also have ANOTHER burger on the regular menu that comes w/ a pierogi on top.

SAMSON (2017-2025) For any fans of the Bearded Beast still here: last Monday I had to say goodbye to my wild man. He very quickly + unexpectedly became ill - 4th stage lymphoma. But he was strong to the end and flushed two bunnies the day before he died.

I wish I were surprised that my PhD institution could be so repressive and callous with regard to genocide. But I'm not. At least the lines in the sand are clear now. Surely all this spells the end of appeals for unis to "protect" students and create "safe" spaces.

Fate didn't want me to attend the MLA after all. I thought the scratchy throat I've had recently was just due to the extremely dry air in my apartment. But alas, I have Covid. How long should I isolate? CDC guidelines are useless now since they've thrown in the towel.

I'm going to the upcoming conference b/c it's the end of my term on the exec committee of a forum and my former advisee is presenting on one of our panels. But I had already decided not to renew due to cost, inconvenience, etc. And now this is an even better reason.

@JohannaMellis Dealing w/ some ongoing health issues (nothing fatal but v. painful and an impediment to work) has really forced me to scale back on everything and be more realistic about what I can (or want to) do. Sometimes it can be a good thing when your body steps in to teach you a lesson!
