One emotional moment after my talk: a young Bosnian named Nedim, who lost most of his family in Gorazde in the civil war of the early 1990s, came up to say that he & others like him were alive because of the efforts of my colleagues and myself at the @un in those days. He had tears in his eyes as he hugged me and I was too moved to speak. You think back on those 18-hour days and nights, which so often seemed futile, and suddenly you know it was all worthwhile.

It’s been a terrific few days in Germany, addressing international conferences on themes I don’t spend enough time on back home. Delivered a rousing address on “Rebuilding Global Governance” and took an hour’s worth of questions from 45 participants from nearly 30 countries at the Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg
