Last month, we received a family gift of $260,000. We debated a lot and ultimately decided for a few reasons to drop it all on our 3.75% mortgage. Our mortgage went from $750k --> $490k We recognize we could have made much more investing, but it felt secure to take a little risk off the table. Mortgage calculator shows this will save us $285k in interest. We then recasted our mortgage and our payment dropped from ~$3,800 to ~$2,400. A little bit closer to freedom.

What would work better? A flat tax rate where everybody - regardless of income level - pays a fixed percentage; Or A consumption-based national sales tax system where you are only taxed on goods you purchase?

Wanna hear something crazy? I started drawing Social Security at 62, and I retired as a self employed carpenter just over 2 years ago. I have retirement investments, but I haven’t touched them yet. Here’s the crazy part: I pay more in income taxes now than I ever did when I was working. Make it make sense? I guess it’s because I no longer have business deduction write offs, not sure? All I know is that I think it blows. Taxation is 100% theft in my humble opinion.
