one of my core memories is a time when i was 3-5ish and having waffles and was distressed that the butter kept vanishing and my dad knelt in front of me and explained that it melted and went inside the waffle. i do not think he intended that to be a core memory. but it sure is.

there's such a big discrepancy between what adults think (or hope) will be formative and memorable for a child, and what a child actually commits to memory or finds impactful. like all I remember from my childhood trip to disneyland is a wall covered in gleaming black mosaic tile
