For those whose only language is violence, murder, and harassment, the answer is to rise together and defend ourselves, because they show no respect for the rule of law. Among those killed was an Ethiopian man, a hardworking immigrant, murdered while having breakfast at McDonald’s. Blaming others will not bring change. Real change in Africa begins when we look within, condemn this behavior, and take responsibility. Ignorance, cruelty, and silence only keep this barbarism alive. Human lives must matter. It is shameful. It is disgusting.

What has shocked some residents in Alexandra is the feeling that other townships — like Vosloorus, Soweto, and Tembisa — often unite when a community member goes missing. But many feel that residents of Alexandra have not come together in the same way since Kabelo’s disappearance.
