@nealjclark1 well, abundant America was a post-war thing, and it wasn't immediate. living in motels will have been a pre-abundance holdover.

If you read a lot of noir books and stuff from the 40’s/50’s it’s pretty clear that a lot of people lived in motels. Not just criminals but nurses etc. I’ve never known anyone to live in a motel. I don’t think the abundant American world was real. Life has always been dangerous.

early in my career (00s) i went to a web conference where Google gave a talk and at one point they explained why they had to use HTML tables for their image tab, “it’s the only way” etc. the next speaker got up and before even starting their talk, they corrected them and explained how to do it w/o tables in a room full of ppl. that awkward moment has stuck with me my entire career. a constant reminder that even the devs we might put on a pedestal are still figuring things out in real time.

Just in general, Ishmael is so fucking funny. He's constantly digressing into encyclopedic infodumps, he loses his train of thought all the time and he's so prone to theatrics and pomp.

@turningmystile my mum used to beat me, put knives in me, and strangle me, and for years I took it like "oh she was just taking out how bad dad is to her," even though dad was never violent to her. it's.. a tangled mess. runs deep.

Women are more than capable of committing domestic violence against men (I watched my mom throw remote controls at my dad growing up) but you wouldnt know that with how everyone talks about it. Women can throw chairs at men and still be depicted as the True Victim.

A woman gets accused of domestic abuse and all of a sudden everyone understands what reactive abuse is and they use it to say that clearly shes the real victim and her ex boyfriend must've been abusing her even worse and shes just reacting to it. I hate our culture.

I understand why traumatized people think about becoming catholic. It's like wanting to live inside the dictionary. Nothing is even allowed to be confusing in the dictionary. If you can fit yourself in there, you then have an unquestionable definition

@SandyofCthulhu Doom games are full of ugliness and moralism though??? the demons are ugly, and you face evil with the bluntness of a shotgun. and, as you said, they have no sex. so they're clearly not the Sex & Violence side.

Nomadic Warriors for Pritzker⚔️
Correct! Their movement was led by a world-historic con man and all of the foot soldiers were too dumb and cretinous to accomplish their aims! Their big immigration push was sunk by nice Minnesotans who stood up for their neighbors! Kash Patel is having too much fun flying his Swiss girlfriend around to persecute their political enemies. They had no foreign policy vision, so neocons happily filled the vacuum. They thought that sending Elon and a bunch of CS majors into the federal bureaucracy would demolish "The Cathedral," but these days the DOGE bros are getting deposed and Elon spends his hours commenting "Very Nice" on AI images of anime girls. Now the Democrats are going to sweep Congress, and spend the next two years hauling all of Trump's cronies in and raking them over hot coals. While this happens, the lame-duck president will be too occupied picking out trim for his ballroom to bother himself with their protection, or, for that matter, with tending to the political project he ostensibly set in motion. The movement will continue, all right, but it will be the purview of increasingly marginal dum-dums and grifters huffing the exhausted fumes of Trumpism as the bored public slowly drifts away. All of this happened for a simple reason: the far right doesn't know how anything works. If the movement had a real understanding of the mechanisms of government or the material basis for liberalism, maybe they would have had a shot at implementing durable right-wing authoritarianism in this country. Things certainly looked like they were trending in that direction on Jan 20, 2025. The wind was very much at their back! It didn't go that way, though, because the movement ran aground on the problem that Umberto Eco identified 30 years ago: "Fascist are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy." If you live in a dreamworld of conspiracy, you will spend all of your energy punching at shadows, and none of it landing haymakers. But they can't land the knockout blow because they can't identify what "the left" really is or what powers it. This is why this guy's schtick is so funny and so representative: the libertarian who always agrees with the authoritarian right. "Crush the left" - Hayek would be proud! It's emblematic of the pervasive self-delusion that has led them into the wilderness. If crushing the left was ever the goal of their leaders, they would have brought along at least a few serious people. But they didn't, and the movement will spend what remains of its stamina building the Big Beautiful Ballroom: MAGA's sarcophagus.

The American right had a once in a generation moment to crush the left and squandered it.

@EvilKeaton I suspect pulp fiction had the opposite effect as intended. "I wanna know what a $5 shake tastes like" makes me see an expensive milkshake on a menu and *want* to try it. which then encourages higher prices.

You want to date an 18 year old, 43 year old man? Are you going to attend her high school play? Sit next to her parents at her final assembly? Attend her best friend's 18th birthday party? Pick her up from school at 3pm? Do her homework with her?

I think in general Banksy represents above all - together with a few other acts - how shallow and bourgeois the Gen X idea of revolt and underground always was. Perfectly accomodated for the commercialisation it ostensibly opposed.

Now that Banksy's identity is revealed I once again reflect on how suddenly and rapidly this character, who for a while was the epitome of cool and underground to large number of people fell into some sort of general contempt.
