Every time I see news of another temple or shrine fire, it feels like a piece of Japan’s history is quietly disappearing. The buildings might be rebuilt. But the history and memories they held can never be restored. Haha each restaurant has their own uniqueness. But yeah most of the time maybe 60% of the time I'll get Chick-fil-A. Ranking: 1. Chick-fil-A & Popeyes = tied almost 2. KFC 3. Popeyes makes you wait in a line that wraps around the building in the heat, in the rain, in the specific madness of a person who has decided that this sandwich is worth it. And it is. And everyone in that line knows it. And no one speaks because speech would be a distraction from what we are here to do. These are not the same chicken sandwich. One is a covenant. One is a pilgrimage. And my friend was asking me which faith I belonged to. He asked again. "So. Which one?" I looked at the menu. The menu looked back. The menu had seen many people make the wrong choice. I wanted to say both. But in America, "both" is not always peace. Sometimes it is just cowardice wearing a polite smile. I hesitated. To choose Chick-fil-A was to accept the righteousness, the "my pleasure," the bright lights, the parking lot that somehow always has order. To choose Popeyes was to accept the line, the heat, the wait, and the specific truth that some things worth having make you suffer first. I just wanted lunch. Somehow I was standing in the middle of a theological civil war fought with chicken. My friend waited. The cashier waited. The man behind us in line appeared to have opinions. So I took a breath and gave the most Japanese answer I had "I respect both traditions." My friend laughed. That laugh said everything. I had escaped. Politely. Diplomatically. Without honor. In the end, we went to KFC. Not out of ideology. Not out of preference. Because it was closest. And that day I understood something important. In America, the chicken sandwich is not food. It is a declaration of who you are, where you come from, and what you believe happens after you die. A kunoichi does not choose the chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich reveals the kunoichi. I did not come here to eat chicken. I came to stand at a border made of bread and pickles and was asked for a passport I did not know I needed.
